It seems to me that there is an awful lot of advertising for betting websites and payday loans - just what we really don't need bearing in mind we are in the clasp of a recession - do we really need to get ourselves into any more debt or be tempted into this downward spiral?

YABU
One could say the same about alcohol/junk food/toys
About 90% of ads are a pile of shite anyway

Bokkanikkaglory · 07/05/2012 20:11

Military - not the same thing surely though

Yabu!!

Flyingwithoutwings · 07/05/2012 20:14

It's the online gambling ones that get me. In these debt ridden times should we even have online gambling?!!
I've seen someone run up >£25k of debt this way and ruin their family completely.

Bokkanikkaglory · 07/05/2012 20:16

Flying - my point exactly - thus kind of advertising just "breeds and feeds" addiction.

And payday loans have awful interest rates and fees if you fail to pay back in time, much higher than high street lenders.

MilitaryWag · 07/05/2012 20:19

@Bokkanikkaglory No, obviously
Perhaps I needed to explain...but really cant be arsed dont want to

Flyingwithoutwings · 07/05/2012 20:20

You're right, it was an addiction problem that started the gambling (no casinos in the area)... It escalated in the usual "oh shit, I'm £100 down, I need to bet £200 this time" etc

He was a complete twat though. And in true MN fashion she "left the bastard"..
But it took 10 years of abuse before she did... Angry Sad

Bokkanikkaglory · 07/05/2012 20:22

I'm not being nasty here just offering up a topic for discussion - participate nicely if you can - but if you can't be arsed then just bow out gracefully

YAB a bit U to object to businesses advertising their legal products and/or services.

sensuallettuce · 07/05/2012 20:24

I feel this way about payday loans.

Bokkanikkaglory · 07/05/2012 20:24

Business - yes I see your point

I don't like the endless ads hosted by washed up slebs for accident compensation or funeral plans - but - they have a right to exist I suppose. I think if people are going to borrow unsafely or gamble unwisely they'll probably always find a way to do it.

MilitaryWag · 07/05/2012 20:27

@Bokkanikkaglory
I didnt realise I had to offer up an in depth analysis of my opinion.
To be frank I thought it would have been obivous but clearly I was mistaken

Shakey1500 · 07/05/2012 20:31

YABU. Legtimate business advertising. I see adverts for McDonalds every day. Doesn't mean I eat there every day. Same as no-one forces people to bet or take pay day loans.

Bokkanikkaglory · 07/05/2012 20:31

Oops (retreats for Wine and goes in search of ....... )

Being off on Maternity Leave, I watch rather a lot of daytime TV. The amount of money the adverts try and entice off me in a week is scary.

I can understand why those who are in desperate need may be drawn to them. Desperation can make people blind to the real costs of these things.

However, they are part of a wide range of advertising drivvel. If I see one more PPI claim advert on TV I may end up screaming.

EllenParsons · 07/05/2012 20:35

YAB a bit U.

We are each responsible for buying or taking services or not. Adverts are forcing anyone to take a debt they can't pay back.

Flyingwithoutwings · 07/05/2012 20:43

Lentilly have to disagree on the gambling. The case I'm talking about was also addicted to alcohol. If online gambling didn't exist, indeed, before it existed, he never gambled as there nearest betting shop was miles away.
I do believe that some people have addictive personalities (hence him being an alcoholic) but that gives even greater reason to make gambling an " in person" thing I think.
