AIBU to not understand the problem with people wanting sun

I have a few friends who get very irate that rain and cloud is bemoaned and that the majority of people in this country appreciate sun and warmth more.

Is there anyone else who gets annoyed that rain and cloud is moaned about on the tv, media, general chit chat.

I prefer the sun... It's not weather fascism as one friend put it.

MissKitty, I live in the South, where we have the drought.

I lived in a hot country for years, trust me its so horrible. England is so beautiful thanks to the rain.

maddening · 07/05/2012 21:00

I like max 23° maybe max 24° with a cool breeze - around 20° is better.

I like the rain too in moderation for spring and summer and fully accept it for autumn and winter - I like a bit of snow in winter - get fed up of people moaning about snow as it is magical

Nevertooearlyforcake · 07/05/2012 21:08

I live in Scotland. I have a Spanish colleague who is leaving after about 6 months in the job, she says it's because of the weather. The chat up here is that Scottish poor health is linked to a lack of vitamin D and less about deep fried mars bars. We usually go up north on holiday but after five years of solid rain, I'm a bit fed up and going down south instead, primarily in the hope of a bit of sun.

I do get a bit sniffy when I hear people say they are emigrating because of the weather though Grin

"get fed up of people moaning about snow as it is magical"

No it isn't. Not when there is no public transport and I can't get to work or to the shops and DD can't get to school. I used to love snow, but the disruption it caused two winters ago was enough to last me a lifetime.

OrmIrian · 07/05/2012 21:11

bijou - exactly! I have noticed how late the leaves are appearing this year. It's May and some trees have only just come into leaf. We had hardly a any spring flowers round here. The bluebells are almost non-existent. Because it's been so dry and it's just started to rain in earnest! Wet is the default weather for this country and if it isn't wet for long enough things die! I don't want to live in a dry brown dusty place. If you go to places where there are waterfalls, rain makes them sparkle and leap instead of just trickling along. Dog can now swim in the canal without coming out smelly and brown because the rain has made it fresh and clear. It smells nice.

I love sunshine but without rain beforehand it would be wasted.

StealthPolarBear · 07/05/2012 21:11

Kitty, I have had a DS born in April 07 and a DD born in Sept 09. I remember both times when DH was on paternity leave as itting out in the sun, drying washing easily etc. DS usually has outdoor parties, think it's only been the last 2 years we haven't been able to (and had to create shade, use sun lotion etc)

maddening · 07/05/2012 21:12

I remember the disruption well but still love it haha Grin

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 07/05/2012 21:14

I like changes In The weather and appreciate our seasons blah blah BUT I swear DOWN that if I do not see a bit of sunshine soon I am going to have a full scale nervous breakdown

McHappyPants2012 · 07/05/2012 21:15

I want a little sunshine, I hate the rain ATM as its not letting up and sick of getting wet going to work and doing the school runs

Francagoestohollywood · 07/05/2012 21:19

Well, I NEED at least 3 months of solid, good, sunny, proper hot weather. This is why I couldn't cope with the British weather.

To be fair it is in the UK that I witnessed the most gloriously beautiful days ever, but they were too rare.

I hate the wind, and the rain.

wasabipeanut · 07/05/2012 21:27

I'm not a big sun bunny - a normal British summer is ok by me. However, the thought of this pissing rain continuing into Autumn is making me feel like the walls are closing in. It's sucking the joy out of Spring. Seeing beautiful apple blossom isn't the same when it's grey and rainy.

For the first time ever DH and I are contemplating the horrors of air travel with small children to get a week away somewhere sunny.

McHappyPants2012 · 07/05/2012 21:31

Wish I could afford to jet off somewhere but we all need passports and then the hoilday and spending money which is impossible ATM

ShellyBoobs · 07/05/2012 21:58

What annoys me is when the weather presenters get all over excited and gushing about the forecast when it's going to be 30 degrees or thereabouts.

It's fuck all use to anyone, unless you're actually on holiday. Public transport becomes unbearable, everyone gets stressed and it's impossible to sleep due to the heat.

20-25C is great. Why do people become ever more excited as the mercury rises beyond what's comfortable?

Francagoestohollywood · 07/05/2012 22:06

30 degrees in Britain is not that bad, actually. It usually cools down at night.

Changethatbulb · 07/05/2012 22:21

I like it sunny, but not hot. When it gets baking hot I get very moody. I once fainted at a bus-stop because of the heat. lightweight

Snow makes me want to swear. Unbearable.

Rain I can live with unless it's that driving rain that soaks you in one minute flat. I am not buying a waterproof outfit just for a trip to Sainsburys.

DrCoconut · 07/05/2012 22:52

I would love some sunshine. I could take DS2 to the park or seaside in the drizzle but let's be honest it's more fun when it's warm and sunny. I don't expect blistering heat, just not to need waterproofs and scarves would do! I also think my mood is better with a bit of summer weather.

ShellyBoobs · 07/05/2012 22:52

...It usually cools down at night.

Not sure I understand. It's akin to saying "it usually gets dark at night", isn't it? Confused

The point is, our homes aren't designed for high daytime temperatures and therefore become uncomfortable compared to homes in warmer climes.

MumPaula · 08/05/2012 00:34

I'm with Bijou3 I too have lived in a hot country and think the UK is so beautiful due to the weather.

Sunshine is overrated when it gets past 20/24 and goes on past a couple of weeks.
Why does it seem all my memories of being a kid it seems the summers were sunny and it rained at night?

Francagoestohollywood · 08/05/2012 07:53

Shelly, it means that in England it is very rare to have a temperature of 29 degrees at night, like it happens in countries like Italy or Spain.
Therefore it never is unbearable. In 8 yrs in the Uk I can't remember a single day of relentless heat.

CailinDana · 08/05/2012 09:17

What I don't get is why people I'm looking at you MIL act as though the weather forecast is a solid prediction despite ample evidence that it is frequently wrong. MIL is constantly surprised when the forecast turns out to be incorrect, I feel like saying "Do you not see a pattern here MIL?" It was the same when I once worked in a shop, all the staff seemed obsessed with the forecast and every single day someone would say "Oh it's raining, the forecast said it would be dry!" or "Oh it's sunny, the forecast said it would be wet!" It used to drive me batty.

Finocchio · 08/05/2012 17:44

I'm a sun lover, I used to get quite serious SAD in winters in a gloomy northern city, we migrated southwards but still in the UK and I can feel the benefits. No I don't spend Jan/Feb in a miserable heap feeling tearful.

And I do consider moving further south to proper hot sun. I'm always happiest in summer, and in sunny weather. and I get fatter when it's dull cold weather (like a grizzly bear in hibernation mode) and when I live in a hot place I get thinner.
