to not have a kitchen bin?

hoops997 · 07/05/2012 14:32

In the title really, DP thinks I'm odd not having a bin in my kitchen.

My wheelie bin is just outside my back door so I just open the door and put my rubbish in there, I don't use bags but have my wheelie bin cleaned regularly, I don't see a problem, I also recycle everything that I can.....

That would drive me insane

It was only when the pedal broke on my kitchen bin that I realise just how often I use it when making dinner or something.

ShatnersBassoon · 07/05/2012 14:40

It sounds more inconvenient than unreasonable. I couldn't be bothered to go outside with every piece of rubbish, and I wouldn't want the bin so close to the house, but it wouldn't bother me if someone else did it.

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 07/05/2012 14:42

I agree with your DP :) It is a bit odd and a bit of a faff. I would use a small bag, I wouldn't throw the rubbish straight in the outside bin.

carols9995 · 07/05/2012 14:42

Yadnbu. I've never had one either. Just use plastic bags or bin liners and put them into wheely bin daily.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 07/05/2012 15:59

What happens when it's snowing/freezing pouring down, and you have to open the back door all the time to get to the bin? Doesn't the kitchen get cold/damp/dirty floor?

Noqontrol · 07/05/2012 16:01

We're the same op. we've got the bin outside the kitchen door. I think its a bit of pain though, but we haven't got room in the kitchen for a bin anyway.

CommanderShepard · 07/05/2012 16:14

My parents don't as the dog has got into every one they've tried! So they reuse carrier bags and take them out to the wheelie bin before bed.

fussbucket · 07/05/2012 16:17

I worship my kitchen bin (a lovely shiny Brabantia thing) DP however is allergic to actually putting anything in it...

oreocrumbs · 07/05/2012 16:18

When I had my last dogs I gave up on the bin and used carrier bags, these dogs are not bin raiders so it is back and so much easier!

I like to have a bin/or at least bags so I can move it where I am cooking etc and then I don't have to trail things across the room droping bits and dripping things, maybe I'm just messy.

Aha mixed responses, I just hate the idea of having rubbish in the kitchen, yes my floor does get a bit dirty but I sweep it every day, it does encourage me to get stuff in less packaging, also on shopping days almost everything goes into containers so again less packaging Smile

I couldn't not have a kitchen bin. I do think it's quite weird not to have one, but if it works for you, it's not a bad thing!

ErikNorseman · 07/05/2012 17:08

You put rubbish straight in the bin without a bag? Gross. Do the bin men collect it? I can't imagine ours doing it!

fatsamsgrandslam · 07/05/2012 17:14

YANBU. I have always thought kitchen bins are more of a faff, stinky and you have to empty it every night anyway. I factored this in to when we redesigned our kitchen, and have a hook under my island to hold a carrier bag which gets taken put to the wheelie bin every night. My mum and sister don't have kitchen bins either.

ShatnersBassoon · 07/05/2012 17:14

Ah, so it's a protest against wasteful packaging. Seems a bit self-punishing, but whatever makes you happy I guess.

PorkyandBess · 07/05/2012 17:19

I would never have a kitchen bin on the floor - I just hate ugly things like this on show.

We have a small one of the back of a cupboard door.

BillComptonstrousers · 07/05/2012 17:23

Do you stand at the back door scraping plates/dishes into the bin??

DizzyKipper · 07/05/2012 17:24

YANBU. We don't have a bin either - we found that no bin was dog-proof and can't have one of those cupboard bins with the cupboards we've got.

hoops997 · 07/05/2012 17:32

erik why would the binned not collect my bin? They don't touch it with their hands, it goes straight in the back of the bin wagon, you're not allowed to bag recycleables here either, yes I go to the bin to scrape plates, it's only me and DS here so only 2 plates.

What does "I have the bin cleaned regularly" mean?

You don't clean it yourself but you expect someone else to because you are phobic about bins ? Grin

TidyDancer · 07/05/2012 17:35

Our bin men may have a problem with it because of waste spilling when the bins are tipped. It's sensible to bag I think.

tak1ngchances · 07/05/2012 17:38

OP my mum was like this. She never had a bin and it drove us all mental. When my friends came around to have a cup of tea they'd be standing there with the tea bag in their hand going "where's your bin???" like we were orphans or something. She used to use plastic supermarket bags hooked over the handle of a cupboard which she threw away 5 or 6 times a day. Thought that bins in the kitchen were dirty... but now Ireland has a ban on plastic supermarket bags so she is constantly foraging around for any bit of a bag to use. It's dreadful. DH hates going to their house and this is a big contributing factor.
As soon as I moved out I got a bin in every room in the house. I have TWO bins in my kitchen (one for rubbish and one for recycling).
PLEASE for the sake of your family, get a bin. It is more hygienic in the long run and it is just weird not having one.
(Yes I am scarred by my bin-less childhood)
