To go to church

McHappyPants2012 · 06/05/2012 22:05

Ok I went today as my ds aged 6 is really interested in the church, he seemed to enjoy going and wants to go again.

I really feel like a fraud going as I don't have many Christian believes other than Christmas and Easter.

I do not want to deny my son going and the only way he can go is if I take him.

Do what you like.

I took our DS's at Christmas because I like the singing and the tree - but DH and I are atheist.

madmouse · 06/05/2012 22:08

You are not a fraud for going. Take him if that is what he likes. Be yourself. Don't try to believe what you don't. Don't feel pressured into doing anything. Don't be afraid of questions and doubts. You are perfectly welcome in church just as you are.

(I'm a Christian)

SilentMammoth · 06/05/2012 22:10

Mad mouse puts it beautifully.

Hebiegebies · 06/05/2012 22:12

You'd be welcome in any church

McHappyPants2012 · 06/05/2012 22:13

Thanks I don't want to offend any one.

Today service was good, they had a live band and was really modern with pod cast and many people bought iPad for the reading.

You're being a good parent supporting your child's curiosity and showing him that you're unbiased and open to different views.

perfectpins · 06/05/2012 22:16

Go as long as you're a good person.

It's the people who steal things and who say it wasn't grand auto-theft that shouldn't go! It's the people who lie.

I think it's good that you're putting ds first.

SilentMammoth · 06/05/2012 22:18

I'm glad you enjoyed it and I hope they made you feel welcome? Why should you offend anyone? Atheist or no, everyone should be made welcometc!

Springforward · 06/05/2012 22:18

My take on this is that we celebrate Easter and Christmas, so I'd like DS to understand the religious festival he's celebrating. I see nothing wrong with anyone going on that basis.

I thought Madmouse put it beautifully.

SilentMammoth · 06/05/2012 22:19

Perfect is that a joke?

McHappyPants2012 · 06/05/2012 22:20

The pastor made me and the children welcomed, in all honestly nobody asked why I was there

OP posts:
BombasticAghast · 06/05/2012 22:20

We were made really welcome, and I want DS's to understand what the celebrations are about, same as Springforward.

Also liked Madmouse's post

Just go and enjoy, I promise you won't get struck by lightning

DameHermione · 06/05/2012 22:26

blackeyedsusan · 06/05/2012 22:33

go, you don't have to believe to go. you may make some good friends for you and ds.

Chickenpoo · 06/05/2012 22:34

I have recently had exactly the same situation with my 5 year old daughter but we go along together every so often and everyone is lovely. I join in or not depending on how I feel on the day and people there accept that. Just go when you feel like it and get as involved as you want. I have found that it has made me question a lot of things, including why I stopped going to church, and made me think a bit deeper about life which is no bad thing for me. Madmouse put it perfectly.

marriedinwhite · 06/05/2012 22:38

Go and learn about it. The worst that can happen is that you make an informed decision about whether or not you believe. You will be received into a caring and loving community and it will be your choice to stay or not notwithstanding taking ds along. God and my religious community accept everyone - it is up to you to decide whether they accept God. Madmouse said it well.

Noqontrol · 06/05/2012 22:46

Just go. My dd wants to go too, so I'm going to start taking her. I'll be honest about my own feelings if anyone asks (non believer), but I'm always open to possibility anyway.
