To be a bit dubious of Herman The German!

The other night my DP came home from his saxophone lesson clutching a margarine tub and A4 peice of paper. I said, whats that. He said "this is Herman the German" its a cake. Errr no its not, it looks like some sort of strange dough. The note describes it as "herman the German friendship cake"

Has anyone else heard of this? Its a quaint idea that you half make the cake then separate it and hand the bits on to three friends for them to continue making other cakes. But it takes 10 days!!!! 10 days of milk, flour, sugar, bicarb and yeast festering on my work top.

After 10 days my DP expects me to eat this! Hmm

Serious question - surely it would have gone off? The milk FGS, the millk!!!!!

No. You must do it. It's fab. Don't let Herman die! There is yeast in it so no 'going off'.

eggyblackett · 06/05/2012 20:20

Herman is delicious. A little yeasty, yes, but delicious.

Sparklingbrook · 06/05/2012 20:22

You have to decide who you are going to pass your goo onto in ten day's time. Sad

Sparklingbrook · 06/05/2012 20:22

Didn't mean Sad meant Wink

I was given a Herman on Tuesday. This morning I got up to find he had grown so much in the night he had escaped from his bowl. And my kitchen smells like a brewery. But I'm finding him strangely alluring.

naturalbaby · 06/05/2012 20:25

I've just heard all about it via Women's hour, it sounds like the novelty wears off soon! It doesn't sound like it's anywhere near me in the Midlands?

ItsNotUnusualToBe · 06/05/2012 20:25

Herman is lovely. Smells a bit but so worth it. Herman mark 2, day 9 here.

workshy · 06/05/2012 20:25

ooo Herman is lovely, I made him into a Ginger cake

I also kept a bit with the intention of keeping him alive again as well as passing bits on, forgot about it on top of my frindge, took the tea towel off that had been covering it and it had bubbled right up to the top of the bowl and smelt very yeasty

Sparklingbrook · 06/05/2012 20:25

Oh yes he does grow. A big bowl is required. Grin

SweetestThing · 06/05/2012 20:43

Herman is lovely - I'm on my second incarnation. Thinking I might put cranberries and orange in this one. The last one, I put lots of apples and cinnamon in and it was gorgeous, especially with some Wensleydale cheese.....

Don't let him die! Mine is bubbling away in the kitchen as I type.

camdancer · 06/05/2012 20:43

I'm on day 5 of Herman mark 2. Herman mark 1 was very delicious but I'm going to try a chocolate chip Herman for this one. Then I'm done. 2 is enough. I need to get the yeasty smell out of the house.

ivykaty44 · 06/05/2012 20:44

Chain letters, face like if you want to save their child - they are all the same and now someone thinks up a cake...nooo

Bonkerz · 06/05/2012 20:45

I heard about this the other day when someone offered three hermans on a local Facebook page!!!!! Eating something after ten days doesn't appeal to me!

glenthebattleostrich · 06/05/2012 20:45

Don't let him die, I'm desperate for another Herman.

Mine was cooked with chocolate chips and cherries. My friend did hers with dark chocolate and dried fruit. Both were delicious and we want more!

Does anyone have a link to how to start a Herman?

FallenCaryatid · 06/05/2012 20:47

My friend baked a Herman.
He exploded.
Think of the biggest tin you have to bake a cake, and then find one double that size. Then leave the kitchen whilst he's cooking and spend the time building a Morrison shelter.

Themumsnot · 06/05/2012 20:48

Oh excellent thread. DD2 got Herman from a friend nine days ago and has been feeding him assiduously. We need to bake him tomorrow and she does't want to put the apples and dried fruit in - can she do a chocolate Herman instead?
I pity the mothers of her three friends who will find themselves befriended by Herman tomorrow.

BroomForMyChin · 06/05/2012 20:49

I think I did something wrong with my Herman, he did not taste good. I enjoyed taking care of him though.
