To be hiding in my bedroom demonstrably NOT packing?

I just don't want to. I wish I'd thrown money at the problem. DS is still poorly, DH has spent the last two days clearing stuff out, we're 50% of the way through our allocated packing time and we definitely don't have 50% of the packing done. So obviously it is helpful for me to sulk in my room rather than get on with it, yes?

Absolutely. I presume this is for a house move? Is it too late to throw money at the problem and ask the movers if they can do it anyway?

SophieLeGiraffe · 06/05/2012 15:20

Yes, moving house Wednesday. Quite seriously considering emailing them in the hope someone will pick up over the bank holiday as I assume organising them to pack us too will be too late if I wait till Tuesday morning.

All we seem to be doing at the moment is making mess and then moving the mess from one inconvenient place to another inconvenient place. It's driving me bananas.

Eek. That's quite close! Definitely worth a try.

I'm in the middle of the hell that is trying to organise an international move with a DH who has already moved, three kids aged 5 and under and a dog. The only thing that is keeping me going is the thought that the removal men are packing us up (I've always done it before, including with an 18 month old and a 5 week old baby)

As it's so close Is it worth packing a box/ suitcase of stuff per room that you know you will need ( I mean throw together rather than pack), stash somewhere obvious and then jut packing frantically around it?

SophieLeGiraffe · 06/05/2012 16:01

Well, I'm trying to operate a box per room strategy but I'm not sure how well that's working. Did I mention we're also going on holiday on Thursday so need to work out how to pack for that, or leave holiday items accessible for Thursday. I was all for packing for the holiday, then packing for the move but for reasons I can't now recall that was deemed a Bad Idea.

Eek though, I'm pretty sure your move sounds much much worse.

Get a bottle of wine and get on with it. Lol

Moving in a nightmare ( why I choose to do it twice with newborns I have no idea)

robino · 06/05/2012 16:15

Right then.

  1. pack for the holiday and stick in the car/ shed/ neighbours house. If you need to buy a few extra bits if clothing to see you through and can afford to, do it.
  2. pack your box per room of stuff you,ll need for next few days
  3. write list of what is to go in your "need to get hands on as soon as we move in" box eg bedding, kettle, bottle opener, nappies
  4. crack open the wine and PACK THE REST!

And somewhere near the top of the list, e- mail the movers if you really feel you need to.

Now, I should follow my own advice...

giraffesCantDonateBoneMarrow · 06/05/2012 16:17

if you have enough money you will deffo be able to pay someone to do it - you can buy anything at short notice for the right price

SophieLeGiraffe · 06/05/2012 16:41

I just don't understand how there is so much crap everywhere? Every time I think, right, let's do this, I walk into a different room and basically just turn around and walk right back out again as I can't see through the crap to get to what needs to be done. DH has some kind of system I'm sure.

I'm pretty sure of the advice above the take away point is: investin wine.

Clothes and crap for holiday should be fine as I'm not planning on packing drawers, they're coming out full and being stacked in the van. See also wardrobe, am investing in garment carriers from the removers. Drawers for bathrooms are also freestanding so coming with us fully packed. Perhaps this is why I'm struggling as it's all bitty bits that needs to be done with no real sense of achievement?

Tell you what though, this house better be good because I am not moving again.

Oh balls, baby is awake.

Pack for the holiday first or else you will pack things you need for the holiday in boxes you are moving. I would be trying to contact the movers to do the packing. I never understand why people would ever want to pack themselves.

CokeFan · 06/05/2012 17:51

Packing up the stuff in the kitchen took me the longest. Have you got someone to pack the breakables for you?

SophieLeGiraffe · 06/05/2012 20:56

Ok, it's going well, I've only had one meltdown in the last four hours.

Our room - done. Clothes hanging ready for removal men and their boxes.
Baby's room - as done as it can be right now. For a baby who has no soft toys, there's an awful lot of them once you put them all together Blush
Living room - done and TV etc getting packed up tomorrow morning so we can watch the final episode of Homeland tonight. Priorities Grin
Dining Room = a disaster zone
Bathrooms - largely packed but DH needs to decide what to do with his trophies. They are not going in my new bathroom. He may not know this yet.

So tomorrow, yes, the dreaded kitchen pack. Plus all the posh crockery and glasses that are in the dining room. And all the baby's toys. I'll pack as much of the food as I can tomorrow leaving out pasta for Monday night tea and trying to remember that the baby does need feeding regularly.

Sadly CokeFan we will be packing all the breakables ourselves. I swear to god, next time I'm having someone do the whole lot for me, I don't care how much it costs. In fact I might start saving now.
