It's very sad. I used to love a bit of beasties. Sad

hatebeak · 05/05/2012 20:35

Not unreasonable to be upset when somebody who is part of your cultural "make-up" dies. It is sad - and unsettling, too.

bejeezus · 05/05/2012 20:35

I love alot of Beasties Sad

and he did a lot of work with Free Tibet Foundation- The Dalai Lama paid tribute to him- thats something

YANBU bejeezus, you can't help your emotions and if you have emotional links to their songs with important parts of your life then I can understand that.

bejeezus · 05/05/2012 20:36

it is really unsettling hatebeak

It is v.sad, he was so young Sad. He was only a few years older than me, they were part of the soundtrack of my teenage years.

CommunistMoon · 05/05/2012 20:38

"No one really knows what I'm talkin' about,
Yeah that's right, my name's YAUCH!"

Sad news. DH went to see them at Brixton Academy in '87 (supporting Run DMC) and I grew up with their music too. Huey Morgan is doing a tribute to Adam Yauch on his Radio 6 show tomorrow (from 1pm).

bejeezus · 05/05/2012 20:41

ah thankscommunistIll listen to that

I saw them in Manchester in 1998 (??) wouldhave loved to see them in the '80s

bejeezus it's not just you.
I will never forget last night, sitting at the table having just had a lovely family dinner and DH checking the news on the laptop and looking up and telling me.
We spent the evening feeling kind of stunned by the news to be honest.
Music is a big part of our lives, and we've both seen the BB perform (me once in 98, DH twice at Bestival).
I became aware of the whole Tibet issue through Adam's work, and I'm sure this is true of many of my peer group.
And for me at close quarters, because I sing and have many musician friends, I have seen and felt the devastation of losing an integral part of your musical creation.

I don't generally get the grieving over celebs thing either, but if that person has had some kind of impact on your life and soundtracked it, and you have memories firmly attached to what they created then it will have an emotional impact on you.

MaargeritaPracatan · 05/05/2012 21:59

It is emotional.

There are couple of musicians that, when they sadly pass away, I'll be genuinely grieving, it's intensly private, when their music is part of your DNA 'they' are part of you too.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 05/05/2012 21:59

Was listening To The Five Boroughs today on Gilles Peterson's show as I made the DC's dinner and I had a little cry. DH happened to call right at the end and I was proper choked talking to him.

I like them as much now as I did back then. They're a soundtrack to my life too.

queenrollo · 05/05/2012 22:04

in fact I'll say it here....I was at work when I found out that John Peel had died. The first thing I did was burst into tears and the second thing I did was shut the shop for ten minutes to compose myself.
And I still well up if his voice unexpectedly drifts out from the radio.

and the same applies to me and DH as maargerita just said. I know when Bob Dylan dies my DH will be devastated.

bejeezus · 05/05/2012 22:45

Oh god!! I was just thinking that about Bob Dylan! That will be like my dad dying, I dread that day

thanks rollo betsy and maargaerita you are helping me to understand my reaction

How flipping amazing to have such an impression onpeople whodont know you. Music huh?!

The earlier BB stuff really reminds me of a good friend I had, who died 18 months ago. Ive just realised that.

HerBigChance · 05/05/2012 22:57

I was upset to hear this last night. I grew up in the same era and, although I liked a lot of other music, it feels like part of my cultural growing up.

And it's bloody unfair and horrible to die at that age. He was only a few years older than me.

redpanda13 · 06/05/2012 01:04

It does feel like a part of my youth has faded. Saw them at the Barrowlands in 86.
Queenrollo I was at my niece's christening when I heard the news John Peel had died. He was the sound of my teenage bedroom. I did'nt always like what he played but I dutifully tuned in.
Sounds mad but John Peel had his Old English Sheepdog as bridesmaid at his wedding and the Beastie Boys had one in their Fight For Your Right (to party) vid. We had one and that was enough for my mum to love them both!
