...are also those banned by predominantly Old Testament based religions?

Prawns, crab, predatory fish like marlin and shark, bottom feeders like mussels etc

Actually, not just the OTHER based religions like Judaism and Islam. Afaik Hindus and, Buddhists have similar guidelines (but I know far less about those)

Coincidence?

Prawns and crab aren't banned during pregnancy, they just have to be cooked thoroughly.

PurplePidjin · 04/05/2012 21:37

I think you are overthinking it. Some types of fish are banned due to mercury content, afaik mussels are high in vit A,and prawns need to be cooked completly as do eggs.

I love the bit of Leviticus about not eating pre-packaged sandwiches :o

kittyandthefontanelles · 04/05/2012 21:45

And soft poached eggs, didn't Moses decree Summat about that?

BananasInBloomers · 04/05/2012 21:45

LOL AThing

AThingInYourLife · 04/05/2012 21:48

Yes, the commandment about soft poached eggs was on the first set of tablets that got smashed up.

Then the poultry lobby got involved before the final stone tablets were finished.

FatimaLovesBread · 04/05/2012 21:50

What about the commandment on brie and camembert?

Biscuitbreaker · 04/05/2012 21:51

Athinginyourlife - is the pre-packaged sammich a genuine no-no? Why? Shock

BananasInBloomers · 04/05/2012 21:51

Thou shalt not eat offal

kittyandthefontanelles · 04/05/2012 21:51

Though shalt not lick stilton nor covert thy neighbour's liver pate.

kittyandthefontanelles · 04/05/2012 21:53

That'll be yer ackchuel Listeria, biscuitbreaker

wonderstuff · 04/05/2012 21:57

Strange that in ancient times food that seemed to often cause illness was declared unclean or whatever?

Prepacked sandwiches not on NHS list of no nos, but in US advise against precooked deli stuff is advised against as is food poisoning risk.

Birdsgottafly · 04/05/2012 21:58

OP i agree with you, also the ancient hygeine practices indicate that they did have a knowledge beyond what some think.

PurplePidjin · 04/05/2012 22:00

'twould be offal if I went and offended someone

on a serious note, wot wonderstuff said

There are signs up all over the NHS maternity hospital I attend about the risks of listeria and how you can get it from prepackaged foods.

Not that that means it's a total no no. Just be careful about where you get prepackaged sambos.

solidgoldbrass · 04/05/2012 22:03

It's a bit more the other way round as the prohibitions in the Abrahamic religions tended to be against the sort of food that doesn't keep well in a hot climate. But a lot of the food warnings, like a lot of all the other pregnancy warnings, are actually a lot less about public health than they are about controlling women's behaviour.

kittyandthefontanelles · 04/05/2012 22:09

SGB- controlling women's behaviour? Do explain...

PurplePidjin · 04/05/2012 22:15

I don't feel very controlled, it's dp who doesn't eat pork/shellfish etc. Out of respect, I tend to eat pork when I'm out mmm bacon sandwiches and rarely bring it into the house. I can't think of anything on the list I can't live without for a few months, even smoked salmon sarnies.

Athinginyourlife - I have never heard this! Nothing in my hospital either, thanks for the heads up Smile

solidgoldbrass · 04/05/2012 23:35

If a food is harmless to eat, it's harmless for anyone to eat. If a food is dangerous to eat, it shouldn't be eaten. Pregnant or not, how many times have you had listeria from a salad or a piece of cheese? The risks to a foetus from food eaten by a pregnant woman who is in reasonable health and taking reasonable care of herself are statistically pretty fucking low, the constant banging on about it is more about saying to pregnant women: You are a stupid incubator, nothing more, and everyone has the right to police everything you do and everything you ingest.

stargirl1701 · 04/05/2012 23:41

What solidgoldbrass said. With bells on.

kittyandthefontanelles · 05/05/2012 04:41

I might have been an incubator but I wasn't stupid. I didn't might giving up certain things. Really not a biggysmalls and I didn't feel controlled. Still don't get it I'm afraid. "Oh I know what we should do! Let's tell pregnant women they can't eat stilton- that'll control them and that's fun! It'll be our secret..." Hmmm.....

gafhyb · 05/05/2012 06:37

I have to say - I'm with sbg here. I've had gastro probs from shelllfish before so I'd avoid. I can tell when and egg is off or not, so I'd avoid that. Other than that......
