why are you asking?

DialMforMummy · 03/05/2012 19:50

I'd follow medical advice. I am pro vaccinations.

i know that we can get the vaccine privately, the government wont provide it as they say its to expensive. we can afford the private vaccine and i know of no medical reason why we shouldnt - other countries offer it, so just wondered what the wise mn thought?

curiositykitten · 03/05/2012 19:55

No, we've had it already. I'm willing to take the (small) risk of getting it again.

curiositykitten · 03/05/2012 19:56

OH FFS my two are going to wake up poxy in the morning now, aren't they?!

ragged · 03/05/2012 19:58

yes, but mine have had it now anyway & proven immune in subsequent outbreaks.
I'm not in the least bit bothered by the illness, or any possible dangers from the virus, but the faff of full quarantine was enormously stressful. Would have loved to avoided that.

perfectpins · 03/05/2012 20:01

My dd 7, has had no vaccinations. My personal choice. I have no regrets whatsoever.

ratspeaker · 03/05/2012 20:05

If it had been available when my dc were younger i would have.
One of my DD had it really bad

ratspeaker · 03/05/2012 20:06

Oh and if a vaccination would protect against getting shingles then definately worth it

My 4 year old DS had the vaccine a few weeks ago. Chicken pox was rife in his reception class. I remember the virus from my childhood - very unpleasant. Also didn't want it to get passed on to baby brother.

CavemanDaveHasNeverBeenToWales · 03/05/2012 20:14

Yes I would vaccinate. I can't afford the time off work for 2 x pox

BBisTitanium · 03/05/2012 20:14

Until Jan i would of said no, its harmless etc. in dec/jan a close family friends daughter contracted CP, the way in which her body reacted to the virus (never had spots, just very poorly and lifeless), allowed it to attack her brain, this resulted in her having a stroke and coming close to death. This beautiful one year old now has to learn to sit crawl walk and talk again, she has brain damage and will struggle with mobility, and is partially sighted, she will never regain her vision. If a vaccine could prevent that, then if it was in my power id give it.

DrSeuss · 03/05/2012 20:14

Of course. But watch out she whoy starts a thread on jabs shall get flamed. 'this the Mumsnet law!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 03/05/2012 20:15

DS2 had it because DD had luekemia and he had not had CP yet.
It was sensible to vaccinate as he would be the most likely source of infection and it meant I could take him to play groups.

He got CP about five years later but very mildly.

I have no plans to get my younger children vaccinated but I would NEVER, EVER willingly expose them to CP.

no. I thought I would but had a very long conversation about this with DS various paeds after GP wasn't sure and they wanted him not to have the vaccine. RSV on the other hand they would have given if it wasn't for cost.

It should be a decision based on medical risk and for CP that depends on the child.

My DS has a long complex history though

TheHumancatapult · 03/05/2012 20:21

I would have 3 out 4 of mine done if could . That's to protect the 4th who has had it 7 times now and everytine puts her in hospital as she has immune issues

SunflowersSmile · 03/05/2012 20:24

I am considering vaccine for ds 2. [At certain times of this year it would bugger things up if he got it].

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 03/05/2012 20:27

human we got DS2's done via DD's paed. Could you ask? It is available in the UK just not offered.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 03/05/2012 20:30

No as ds has no underlying health conditions and therefore I wouldn't expect chicken pox to cause any big problems, which it didn't. I would only vaccinate for things where the risk of vaccine outweighs the risk of illness.

I would if he had another condition which increased the risks.

No. Both boys had it and were fine - played most of the time and still had the energy to fight with each other! :)

bumbleymummy · 03/05/2012 20:37

Any disease is going to be serious for an unlucky few...we can't vaccinate against everything!
