RE day

DS's school have an RE day coming up where they are going to visit several different places of worship. Only where we live that means they'll be going to a Catholic church, a C of E church and another church.

I dunno if I'm being unnecessarily arsey, but to me, this isn't RE day, it's "lets look at 3 different flavours of Christianity day". I'm increasingly concerned by the things DS comes home talking about (needing to be Christened, needing to be married if you want to have babies etc) - I get that he's at a CofE school (because there is no choice, all the schools within a 20 mile radius are religious) but I just think in the interest of balance, wouldn't they be better off getting on a bus and going to look at a temple, mosque, synagogue and learning that there are other points of view out there?

Perhaps they've alrealy looked at other religions at great length in the classroom?

There is limited time to cover these things so maybe they're just making the best of the time they've got.

Have you put your views to them and asked them?

I would expect other religions to be explored on something called RE day too. Have you spoken to them about it?

My ds goes to a CofE school, which i think is quite strongly CofE, and they have been to a mosque and a Sikh temple and have had a whole topic on India and Hinduism.

YANBU

But you can always take him to those places yourself.

If you Google your local temple, mosque, synagogue...they normally have visiting times on their websites.

I'm going in to talk to them about it later.

I'm taking them out for Beltane celebrations by way of balance but DS believes what he is told at school absolutely and if they say that "God made him" and I disagree he think's I'm wrong. Hmm

YANBU, but you could take her to other places of worship yourself perhaps? Agree that they only have limited time outside classroom so may not have enough time to get to mosque etc.

WhereYouLeftIt · 03/05/2012 13:26

OP, my DS came home from primary saying he was a Christian (he was maybe 7 at the time). It wore off pretty quickly.

I agree that it really isn't an RE day if no other religions are visited.

skybluepearl · 03/05/2012 13:28

I think thats the way it is in infants. seems to calm down and broaden out in later school years.

EdlessAllenPoe · 03/05/2012 13:32

if getting on a bus would be involved in seeing any other place of worship - there's your reason.

it is harder for the teacher to organise and incurrs cost.

bintofbohemia · 03/05/2012 13:42

I guess so, but then why bother at all? Why not just say, we fancy a day strolling around the many churches of the town? Or call it Christianity day or sommat? I'm really not very comfortable with it...
