Disgusted with Dwp tricking people into signing away their data protection rights Re Work Programme

Im disgusted with this . The Dwp are forcing people into slave labour by tricking them into signing away their data proection rights . Their details are then passed onto a provider and they are then forced into " work experience " which means working 40 hours a week for free . Tesco , for example , had over 2000 people working for them for free for 6 months at a time . If you or your partner cant find a job , this is why .

Extract from the first link :
"(4) Your CV: Remember that you do not have to give either the Jobcentre or any Work Programme Provider or Subcontractor a printed or electronic copy of your CV to keep. Though it might be reasonable to provide evidence of your ability to create, maintain and make use of one, which could mean only showing them a version of your CV, do not give them a copy to keep."

Now, if you're genuinely looking for a job, why would you NOT supply a copy of your CV? Confused

Kladdkaka · 02/05/2012 15:47

I'm probably going to get crucified for this, but what is wrong with working in exchange for benefits and experience to put on your cv? Confused My daughter finishes school in a couple of weeks. She's applied for the few jobs she's seen available and she's written to other companies to see if she can volunteer to get experience and/or a foot in the door.

ABatInBunkFive · 02/05/2012 15:51

Because if they can have people do the job for free why would they pay someone to do it instead?

There is nothing wrong with volunteering or doing work experience, that's not really 40hour weeks though is it

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 02/05/2012 15:56

It depends what your daughter wants to do. I agree that targeted work experoence can be very valuable. However forcing terminally ill people to stack shelves in Tescos for weeks with no prospect of a job is merely providing tesco with a free workforce and disincentivising tesco from employing people properly.

Kladdkaka · 02/05/2012 16:21

She's applied to the local ICA (Swedish equivalent of Tesco). She just wants a job, any job. They have no vacancies at the moment. She hopes it will mean she'll be front of the queue when one becomes available. I can see though that a lot depends on the boss having a conscience.

As a total aside, I feel really bad for her. She desperately wants a job and trawls the jobsites applying for anything that comes up, but she gets nowhere because the odds are stacked against her. She is a school leaver with limited experience; she has no family connection (nepotism is the name of the game here); and she doesn't get any help from the disabled employee incentives until she finishes higher education.

edam · 02/05/2012 16:40

Klad, hope your dd finds something soon. But the UK scheme really is disgusting - unemployed people have been forced to stop voluntary work they were already doing in order to get a job and made to go and work for Tesco for free. A woman who had the qualifications to work in museums and was volunteering in a museum was made to go and work in Poundland. Depriving someone else of an actual job at Poundland. The UK govt. schemes (there are a number of them) were just designed to massage the figures, while providing big business with free labour - ultimately actually costing jobs. Bananas.

Kayano · 02/05/2012 16:42

So in her case they would have no vacancies for her at te moment because they are all being done for free Confused

badgeroncaffeine · 02/05/2012 16:42

You're quite right OP, the whole "workfare" system of slavery is a complete disgrace.

ABatInBunkFive · 02/05/2012 16:42

Yes.

Outlaw73 · 02/05/2012 16:50

Now, if you're genuinely looking for a job, why would you NOT supply a copy of your CV?

Because its not used to apply for jobs , its used to send to third party providers , ie A4E , to use people as slave labour . These providers get a substantial payment for these referrals , so while the goverment are cutting back everywhere , theyre handing over millions to these companys out of taxpayers pockets . Were all paying for it in some way .

Its not the publics responsibility to prop up private businesses or work for them for free . Who in their right mind would volunteer to work 40 hours a week at tesco for free .
Paid staff at tesco were sent home early over christmas while the " volunteers " worked for free .

Unemployed people providing free labour to private companies skews the economic model of supply of and demand for labour.

The prevailing wage rate should be at the intersection of supply and demand - if there is a large influx of free labour, it undermines the whole model and wage rates in that sector will fall. (i.e. Tesco et al can get away with paying their whole workforce less than the pittance they already pay them)

It really is the first thing you learn in A level Economics, and if it weren't so tragic for those involved, it would be comical that any policy maker actually thought this was a good idea.

Outlaw73 · 02/05/2012 16:54

I'm probably going to get crucified for this, but what is wrong with working in exchange for benefits and experience to put on your cv?

Because theres a minimum wage in the uk and forcing people to work for free creates a lack of jobs . This lady was forced onto the work programme despite being unwell and being the sole carer of her 5 year old .
