to send 5yr old to school with earache

Thought would be more traffic here than health! I always think we're bit cautious with sending to school. She was up at 4am with fever (38.5) and earache, gave neurofen and she settled at 5. She seems ok now, and wants to go as loves reception so much. I am SAHM and will be within 10min of the school today. Oh and swimming tonight if she is still ok. Really don't know either way, could have written AIBU to not send.

No don't send her to school with an earache and a temperature (nurofen will only be disguising the temperature). And certainly do not take her swimming tonight, even if you think she is better.

ContinentalKat · 02/05/2012 07:55

No school and no swimming today!

FallenCaryatid · 02/05/2012 07:55

No, as a teacher please don't send her. She's got a bad ear infection, she's tired and if she loves school, why send her in pain?
No swimming either.
Take her to the doctor.

AmberLeaf · 02/05/2012 07:56

No school/deffo no swimming!

Earache is horrible!

mumnotmachine · 02/05/2012 07:57

No, and no, if you are a SAHM theres no excuse as you dont have to think of alternative childcare.
And definately no to swimming for at least this week, otherwise you will find that DD will be a lot more poorly! Getting ears wet is the worst thing you can do if you have earache

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 02/05/2012 07:57

No, don't send her.

FateLovesTheFearless · 02/05/2012 08:01

My 7 year old was up in the night around 2am with earache and a temp of 39.8. Medicine given, she is fine this morning but she is not going to school. Experience with her tells me by mid morning her temp will be up again.

QuickLookBusy · 02/05/2012 08:03

No but I'm sure you've got that message by now.

My dd has recurring ear infections. As soon as she is in pain we ring the drs and make an appointment. The nurse usually has a look and if it's really bad she gets antibiotics.

Dd now also regularly gets her ears syringed and that seems to be helping.

Swimming would be the worst thing to do with an ear infection.

valiumredhead · 02/05/2012 08:41

No and definitely no swimming this evening.

Debsbear · 02/05/2012 08:46

Certainly no swimming. As for school, I think it's up to you. If she really feels ok now it may have been a flash in the pan. As you say the school can contact you if there is a problem, and it's not like an ear infection is contagious.

alphabite · 02/05/2012 09:06

I used to get horrible ear aches when I was young. I was always sent to school but often felt absolutely dreadful. If you do send her to school it might be worth ringing at lunch time to see how she is doing. No swimming tonight either. Ouch!

RoxyRobin · 02/05/2012 09:11

Poor little soul! Earaches are very distressing. DS started getting them at a similar age and I took him to the GP. It turned out he had Glue Ear, and had to have grommets inserted. So a visit to your doctor would not be an overreaction.

Thanks, will tell school whenwe drop dd1. She hates being kept home unlike dd1! School always looks at me as if I have two heads when I tell them that they are ill. They say send them in and they'll decide. They aren't often off, dd2 off with vomiting and dd1 off with fever etc, but school seemed to froun on that one because she had neurofen @ pick up and seemed fine.

No, they can bog off!!

As a reception/KS1 teacher, I'd much rather a temperature/ear achy child was kept at home with their mum/dad/whoever where they belong than in a classroom. Besides children with ear ache complain about it all the time. It's hard to ignore a pain that's in your head!

mumeeee · 02/05/2012 10:12

No don't send her to school and also no swimming tonight.

SpanglesAreYum · 02/05/2012 12:49

Take her to the doctor. Earache needs to be checked as she could have an infection or burst ear drum, which can lead to hearing problems if it doesn't heal properly. She may need antibiotics to clear it up.

QuickLookBusy · 02/05/2012 13:11

I'm shocked that the school feel they should decide if she is ill or not.

You are her mum, you know her best, you should decide.
