Have nc.

I've just had the gas guys round to check our meter, all was fine. When they checked the gentleman's below ours, they noticed it had been wired oddly and he's basically getting free gas. I was pretty outraged at this. The gas guys said to report it, so I have anonymously.

Aibu?

Why would you not? As the alternative is to continue paying for someone else's gas?

But also, why would the meter reader not report it - why is it not their responsibility?

lisaro · 01/05/2012 14:25

Surely the meter readers would have reported it?

porkbelly · 01/05/2012 14:25

He said it would be better coming from us? Not sure, I asked him of he would.

If he has logged his visit, then once you report it, he will be asked why he hasn't done so. So are you sure that he was an offical gas man Confused.

Any tampering with the meter has to be reported. It could actually make it unsafe and should have been delt with there and then.

porkbelly · 01/05/2012 15:05

But his visit wasn't for them, he noticed when he looked in theirs. He definitely was official gas safety engineer.

I'd be suspicious of a gas man that asked someone else to do his job tbh.

lisaro · 01/05/2012 15:12

Actually Birds has a very valid point. It's a safety issue. IIRC when a gas supply is physically interrupted someone has to attend immediately. He would have guidelines for this and would have followed them. If it exploded and someone died he could be charged with manslaughter if he didn't report this.

gafhyb · 01/05/2012 16:41

Was he from British Gas?

ABatInBunkFive · 01/05/2012 16:43

Very dodgy gas man

WorraLiberty · 01/05/2012 17:00

Do you think they didn't want to report it because your neighbour's with a different gas supplier maybe?

Birdsgottafly · 01/05/2012 17:53

But his visit wasn't for them, he noticed when he looked in theirs

If there is a problem with the gas supply, it won't matter who's house he has come to see, there won't be any houses standing in your street.

This for some reason, wasn't an offical visit, perhaps he has taken time off that he shouldn't have and could not explain why he was at yours today, because he wasn't scheduled to be there.

lisaro · 01/05/2012 17:56

There would surely be a legal obligation for him to report if this happened.

Oo err Bird what are you implying? Wink
