To get annoyed at parents parking on double yellow lines for nursery/school drop-offs?

I get so angry when I see mums/dads park on double yellows to drop off their kids - there are yellow lines for a reason!! It makes it dangerous for other children crossing the road and is an inconvenience for other drivers. I find it so selfish - the rule is there for everyone to abide by!

YANBU

DD1 went to an 'aspirational' (snobby!) primary school, where parents thought they had the god given right to park where and when they wanted to, bugger anybody else. The school was just down a residential street, with normal width lanes, and every day there would be massive gridlocked queues of traffic because people would either park on one side of the road and completely block one lane of traffic or they would simply stop their vehicle in the middle of the one clear lane, take their children into the school and basically just expect everyone else to just sit and wait. I lost count of the amount of times 'middle class' parents came to blows arguing about whose 4 by 4 had the right of way.

It was a totally vile school full of vile, entitled, self-righteous parents

It's not down to judgment call. If you park dangerously you'd still get prosecuted for it. The onus is on the badge holder to park sensibly and safely.

I'd say it's down to numbers. For eg at the school I park outside if it was no yellows then EVERYONE would park on there and it would cause traffic congestion, dangers in crossing etc. Because of lines (theoretically) only me and one other parent park there, traffic merely has to slow down to let traffic come from the other direction if necessary not squeeze past a long line of cars.

In practise of course everyone ignores the lines and zigzags so the local PCSO has to come and move people on regularly.

Disabled badge holders are allowed to park on double yellow lines because a) in many cases they are not able to use public transport and b) what might be a 5 minute walk for an able bodied person could take a disabled person very substantially longer and/ or hurt.

Oh, and if there was another option - parking near the school that I could use - I would use it. I use the lines when no other option is available as my children cannot walk from further away. If they could they wouldn't have badges.

Glitterknickaz, i have just typed out a reply and then deleted it as tbh I dont need the hassle, but yes, i am in the same situation as you and ohh for a School run that didnt involve death stare looks and snorts from the other parents, its my daughter I feel bad for, growing up with this prejudice ( in her case that her disability isnt always visual).

A timely post to raise my bp...

Was having a chat with said PCSO, he said about the complaints he'd had, and that he'd responded I was parking completely legally and responsibly.... the parents complaining apparently really didn't want to have to slow down as they passed the school!

At my DC's school it's been a nightmare for this, no yellow lines but a private road running past the school that people aren't allowed to drive up let alone park on! Parents park up wherever they wat, take the kids in then set off again completely ignoring the people walking down, often with younger children and prams.
Te school has sent letters, local residents constatly complain to the police and we've had a (scary) PCSO patrolling the area on and off since last year. It helps for a bit then it gets back to normal. When it rains it's bloody chaos, you'd think it was acid rain they way people try and park practically inside the playground!

Sparklingbrook · 01/05/2012 13:46

Parents who have blue badges know that they are doing nothing wrong so shouldn't worry about anyone complaining. Easier said than done by the sound of it. Sad

NorbertDentressangle · 01/05/2012 13:49

It tends to be the same few offenders at our school including 2 childminders who apparently used the reasoning "well I have more children to drop off/pick up/look after than most people"....er, no you don't.... there are families with more children than you mind and other childminders who manage perfectly well without blocking access roads, parking on double yellows etc

Scholes34 · 01/05/2012 14:02

Don't confuse zig-zags and double yellows. Parking on zig-zags is an abolute no-no, but you could get away with parking on double yellows if there are no loading restrictions. However, if there was someone around to enforce the parking restrictions, you'd have to put forward a good case to appeal any ticket you might have been given on double yellows, as I'm sure anyone parking to drop off their kids won't be doing so quickly. You'd usually have to be seen to be unloading to avoid the ticket.

DeWe · 01/05/2012 14:11

But didn't you know that the yellow zig zags are just a way of reserving spaces for those few people who think they're that are extra special?

This morning while walking my little boy to school get round the corner oh look there all on double yellows and right where the school crossing is i was so annoyed🙄 God knows how many near misses my sons had and I had to pick him up and shout at the driver to stop☹️ I'm nearly blind in one eye because of a pituitary tumor what will happen when I can't see well in the other eye and hug my son out of the way☹️ Is it a legal to park on school crossing near double yellow lines?
