...the worst possible advice anyone could ever be given?

We have reason and intellect- going with them is surely always going to the best option!

When I have gone with my "gut" feelings I have always done what is right for "me".

I ALWAYS trust my nstinct. It's a strong part of what keeps a woman safe. Men have muscle we have intuition. Many women have lost touch with their instincts and I firmly believe that they ought to be encouraged to stay in touch with them.

My instincts have saved my arse (literally in one case!) countless times. Grin

I think "go with your gut" is very good advice when you can't use reason to figure out the best choice.

Many times in my life I've found myself in a situation where I had a very strong feeling about how something should be done but I couldn't articulate it, I didn't know why it felt like the right choice. Later t would suddenly be very obvious why that was the right choice (a choice I often I didn't make because I couldn't say why I should). So now I know to trust those gut feelings, I have lived to regret not trusting them. They may arise out of my subconscious; so be it.

Gut instinct is incredibly important, and as others have said, is partially based on knowledge and reasoning, albeit that which you're less aware of than your conscious reasoning and intellect.

IMO, if you want to use all your reasoning and intellect, you have to 'listen to your gut' as part of that process.

Gut instinct has often helped me make decisions and take actions that I couldn't wholly explain at the time, but looking back, were not only usually the right ones, but were very likely based on information I'd picked up subconsciously at the time, but not fully thought through yet - ie my gut knew before my brain did, iyswim

(ever had a gut feeling you should steer clear of someone and couldn't really say why, but later find out information that made that gut feeling VERY right? I know I have...)

I think humans are disadvantaged by our 'reason' in lots of cases (obviously not all :)). Animals use and do not question their instinct and often avoid dangerous situations in this way. Humans often dismiss instinct and walk into dangerous situations because of 'reason'.

We have reason and intellect- going with them is surely always going to the best option!

The problem is that a lot of the time we use reason and intellect to rationalise doing the wrong thing. I mean, how often do you reason logically to arrive at a conclusion? It's almost always the other way around, and often riddled with all sorts of biases, irrationalities and fallacies.

If you want evidence that human beings are very bad at reasoning, just watch Question Time.
