I honestly have no idea if this is normal or not. It seems like masses to me! - but is it?

DP and I have a net income of about 3500 a month; we don't have DC yet but hopefully will soon and will then have to factor in nursery costs of about 700. WIBU to go for a mortgage with repayments of about 1k?

Confused

The amount sounds reasonable but I would make sure that you get sickness/accident/redundancy cover and factor in the monthly payments for this.

Just to say thank you so much for all the helpful posts, esp emsy Jareth and Flangellina - really appreciated.

Flan, you speak much sense and I was number crunching all last night. Our deposit would be low, yes, so I think we will talk it through thoroughly with the Nationwide advisor and plan different scenarios. Basically, we could survive if DP lost his job but not if I lost mine.
