Especially in the midst of a recession. I don't want to know that XY and Z has an amazing lifestyle thanks. Not good reading.

YANBU... It's about as pointless as Rear of the Year (unless you're on the list presumably)

The parents of a child at DS's school are in it. They do a lot for charity (she is the patron of several hospices) and their several business are some of the largest local employers.

I'd love to be rich. Why else do people do the lottery, enter MN competitions, or drool over MN Property porn, if they don't want to have nice things themselves.

I appreciate we are in dire financial straits as a country. But I don't think being jealous of mega-millionaires is a way out of the problem.

Sorry I don't read it and didn't know it was out but I really don't understand the rich bashing that goes on in this country, and the assumption that if your super rich you've not earnt it? Why does everyone have an opinion and think that the rich should give wealth to charity? we should if that's the case ALL give a percentage of our money to charity surely? should all publish our tax's etc.

Why can't we just be happy that the UK has the rich they drive the economy, provide buyers for the large manor houses, work the land and own the estates that make the UK green, they provide super yacht industry which is massive in the UK, they fuel all sorts of industries that employ people - It's the reality of life in developed countries and I for one take my hat off to the people who have stacks of money and enjoy it - it's just green eyed monsters who get all bitter and twisted as think they should give it all away.

before I get flamed, no I'm not loaded, never have been, maybe never will be but that won't stop me from trying to better myself and family and aim for something like a super yacht!! One day!!

read a query yesterday about a family that were just over threshold for getting child benefit and they were advised to take a few weeks unpaid off work and that would allow them to keep it, this advice from a tax accountant , the rich know every loophole and pay as little tax as possible. with the help of very good accountants, does not seem right to me some of these loopholes are very iffy.

Cabbage has a good point.

But on the whole, YANBU. The rich list is rubbish as is the Sunday Times generally. Simple answer, don't buy or read.

diabolo · 30/04/2012 19:01

round someone who is just over the child benefit threshold isn't going to be on this list, nor can I imagine, is it worth their while employing an accountant to try and help them keep hold of just over £1K per year (assuming 1 child).

Do you have a link to the story?

encyclogirl · 30/04/2012 19:13

Take it with a pinch of salt. My mate appeared on it yesterday and was amazed to hear he's worth 115 million! He swears he's got nowhere near that. Remember a lot of that wealth is just on paper. Also I know a someone (work connection) with twice that and he's never on it. He has it all buried away.

roundtoit · 30/04/2012 19:14

i know they will not be on the list but its shows the lengths some people will go to to save on tax etc. They had 3 kids i think, it was in the money section of one of the sunday papers either mail or guardian. It said they would save on their tax bill and also be able to still claim child benefit, as the time off work would just bring them under the new threasholds.
