To think out of hours vets fees are outrageous?!

Have arrived home from lunch to find cat in pain and passing blood.

Phoned PSDA out of hours line. It's £135 for a consultation BEFORE any treatment. It's normally £30 (so more than 4 times the normal cost!!) Snooty woman on phone informed me if I am on housing or council tax benefit I would be elegible for help but as I am not on any of those I need to pay the fee or not be seen, and the well being of my cat is my responsibility which I agree is true and I can normally afford the £30.

It's the end of the month and I don't have a spare £135 + in the bank so my cat will have to wait until tomorrow.

AIBU to think this inflated "out of hours" price is outrageous?!

That sounds very steep. I had the vet out at 11pm on a Saturday night in April this year when the horse had colic, he came to the yard, have horse enough painkillers to fell a small elephant (horse is huge) and stayed until 2am when horse seemed safe to leave for the night and charged me £140!

I'm sick of people who love to have a go at anyone questioning the outrageous fees that a lot of vets charge. Vets get away with their totally out of proportion to what they do charges because they play on the fact that people will pay anything to make their pet better. How many times do we have to hear "you shouldn't have a pet if you can't afford to pay for it". I'm sure that is the attitude that justifies vets charging whatever they want. It's like saying "you shouldn't have a house if you can't afford the roof to be repaired" thus giving roofers the excuse to charge ridiculously high prices. It's not just the rich who should be able to have a pet but that's the way it seems to be going. I wish people would get on their high horse about the greedy vets rather than those who love their pets but are frightened to even speak to he vet for fear of getting ripped off.
