should sift out the trolls and not leave offensive remarks on their site.
I have just been looking on You Tube and a lot of comments are vile.
Why aren't they deleted? Is it all in the name of 'free speech'? :(

I don't get it? What do you actually want to happen?

Everyone thinks they are right, correct, so what makes your opinion more valid than theirs? Why do you get to decide what can and can't be said?

You are not expressing yourself very well.

Tee2072 · 28/04/2012 12:48

I have nothing to add to the previous 2 answers. They nailed what I was driving at.

Can I ask MrsKitty, how old you are?

MrsKittyFane · 28/04/2012 12:51

Betty: It's all my way and I don't care about the consequences.
I was thinking exactly the same. You see, we hold different opinions.

OP posts:
MrsKittyFane · 28/04/2012 12:56

Tee Your replies are designed to convince me that your argument is the correct one by asking how an anyone not see that?.
It's a contradiction.

OP posts:
bettybat · 28/04/2012 12:57

The entire basis of my position on this is recognising the consequences of yours and my opinion.

Do you understand the consequence of the kind of censorship you are advocating, or will you simply continue to cherry pick the aspects of comments here and reply with oddly baseless points in your argument?

You have completely undone your entire position by stating - this is your opinion. Yes, it is. I don't agree with it. Through the power of FOS, you've been able to voice your disagreement, and me mine.

Morloth · 28/04/2012 12:59

Weird thread.

MrsKittyFane · 28/04/2012 13:01

Betty did I say anywhere that I wanted to stop all conversation, debate?
Insulting, harmful, threatening posts. Ones that incite hate and violence, yes censor away.

OP posts:
MrsKittyFane · 28/04/2012 13:04

People who hold very strong opinions often don't like people challenging them. They feel censored.

OP posts:
Morloth · 28/04/2012 13:07

You don't want to challenge them, you want to silence them. Big difference.

bettybat · 28/04/2012 13:08

But what you're not getting is that by implementing that, you put us on a path towards that. Those are the consequences of what you would like to see. Nor have you been able to recognise that for every point you make, there is an undesirable flip side. You also haven't been able to answer or argue your points of why your opinion on what is acceptable should be taken as law.

There are already laws to stop incitement of hatred. You have every right to report comments of those kinds to the site owner, or even call the police if you wish.

But as we immediately started with on this thread, there is a difference between inciting hatred, and just plain old nasty comments.

I'm out of here now - exercising my right to say I completely disagree with you and to be honest, find your discussion style oddly childish and extremely near-sighted. It almost feels like you're trying to be some clever devil's advocate and right at the end, you will say - ha-ha! I agreed with you all the time! Or something. Anyway, happily continue with your opinion, and I shall leave with mine...ahh, the beauty of freedom of speech :)

MrsKittyFane · 28/04/2012 13:09

Morloth yes you are right. People who incite hate and violence in the name of free speech - yes, silence them.

:o No, I don't agree with you!

OP posts:
Morloth · 28/04/2012 13:13

What bettybat said. They are already laws about inciting violence etc.

Even there where do you draw the line? What is the difference between a terrorist and a freedom fighter?

I also have no idea what you are on about by the way, you seem to be going in circles.

MrsKittyFane · 28/04/2012 13:17

Morloth I have said far less than anybody here. Some people have got a pre-programmed argument going on in their heads.

OP posts:
Morloth · 28/04/2012 13:20

Oooh K, enjoy yourself.

MrsKittyFane · 28/04/2012 13:22

fedupofnamechanging · 28/04/2012 13:25

Oh, the irony of objecting to freedom of speech, while simultaneously exercising your right to it!

MrsKittyFane · 28/04/2012 13:27

karma as I have said:
Did I say anywhere that I wanted to stop all conversation, debate?

OP posts:
fedupofnamechanging · 28/04/2012 13:36

Kitty, few people want to read insulting posts, but as soon as you remove them, then freedom and debate are automatically gone, not just for that poster but for you too.

You really can't have a little bit of free speech or a little bit of censorship - it really is an all or nothing, warts and all choice.

There are already laws which deal with people who encourage others to cause physical harm, but airing an unpopular opinion, is just that - an opinion. If it isn't causing physical harm then a person retains the right to express it.

Everyone else retains the right to jump on it and call them a twat.

Tee2072 · 28/04/2012 13:39

You constantly contradict yourself. I am thinking you are very young and/or very immature.

And I too am done engaging. Enjoying creating a fascist society. I will fight you every step of the way.

MrsKittyFane · 28/04/2012 13:55

Karma
Yes, I understand what you are saying totally.
I've just read your posts again. Up thread you said this:
Just because someone is not allowed to articulate their opinions, it doesn't mean those opinions cease to exist. I would always prefer to know what someone really thinks and censorship would remove that.
Yes.

Tee My views/ opinions are not fixed. Don't patronise me. I ask a question in AIBU to get opinion. Some choose to answer in detail and offer views I may have not thought of.

MrsKittyFane · 28/04/2012 13:59

Others flounce.
