to think that swimming is not a "life skill"?

A friend today said to me that swimming was a life skill (and that's why her son took lessons).

I don't think it is a life skill. AIBU to think that?

Yes it is. I would list it with learning to drive, learning to cook and learning to budget.

porcam most human settlements are build around water sources, rivers and canals are dominant central features of all towns and cities I've lived in. How do you avoid them?

I think it is. I speak as someone whose best friend can't swim and for whom holidays have been less enjoyable as a result. (And the safety aspect obviously)
