DS has broken into our kitchen cupboards which are locked. I can't find anywhere else to put the cleaning stuff. Can anyone recommend any such child locks that actually work?

can you link to the ones you have currently please?

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/04/2012 15:28

No, they don't exist. If DD can't open it, neither can I.

Whenisitmysleepytime · 27/04/2012 15:30

I can't open the ones we have from John Lewis Hmm
here
They're stiff and any stickiness (like on toddler hands) makes them hard to grip.

CaptainKirk · 27/04/2012 17:01

We couldn't find any that worked either so we put a gate on the kitchen door instead. It won't be long until he finds a way through that too I imagine...

boots have magnetic ones, i had to get a handyman to fit them as dh and i are useless but they work really well. Just dont loose the magnet as you have to buy a new set.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/04/2012 18:02

I have the magnetic ones on a couple of cupboards and actually, they are the only ones DD hasn't worked out. They were sooo expensive though. Oh, and don't work on most of my drawers.

MrsLettuce · 27/04/2012 18:05

We had magnetic ones too, neither DC managed to figure them out. They worked fine on both cupboards and drawers.

MaresyDotes · 27/04/2012 18:12

We couldn't find any that worked. Solved it with a big strip of Velcro on the edges of all the cupboards/drawers. So effective, we had to cut the strips down a bit as even I couldn't open them!

JsOtherHalf · 27/04/2012 18:29

Magnetic locks here too, and we got a handyman too.

Handyman was not a freebie with the locks though...

I never found anything that ds2 couldn't open.

He could also open all of the stairgates, we had 5 at one point just to try and slow his escape slightly.

I've posted before about him climbing out of the catflap at 19 months. At 6 in the morning while we slept. From his cot and through the five stairgates.

I found him on the decking in the garden, which is accessed by 2 more gates, removing his nappy and attempting to get into the deep paddling pool!

So, after going off completely, I don't know of any locks that work Grin

Don't get child locks get a propper lock with a key - my house has a cupboard with a propper lock and key fitted before I moved in.

Similar to this

Or you could fit a padlock

If dc can pick a lock that needs a key................... well ...............nope - no suggestions

wishiwasonholiday · 28/04/2012 05:06

Omg buckbuck that is scary, how did he get the door unlocked? My ds can open safety gates but his room is right next to ours so his gate wakes me up and slows him down as he's still half asleep.

I had a lock that hooked over the handles as we had a brand new kitchen but ds has never bothered so I don't have it on now.

BuckBuckMcFate · 28/04/2012 18:10

He climbed out of the cat flap wishiwasonholiday!

wishiwasonholiday · 28/04/2012 20:16

Sorry missed that bit was early when i read it, how on earth did you sleep after that? I worry all the time that ds will get out without me waking up.

Debs75 · 28/04/2012 20:27

We have the magilocks and they work really well, even on crappy council cupboards. They work better on single cupboards, double cupboards flex too much and they just open with a hard pull.
Magnet do lockable cupboards with a key in some of their showrooms for their paperwork. You could try them.

Buckbuck my ds was like that, we have found him out in the garden and when we thought stairgates were a good idea he could climb over them, even double height ones. He even squeezed through our bannisters to sneak upstairs

AllysunTillsley · 22/08/2012 15:57

Hi, i know this probably long been solved, but i just came across this post at the weekend whilst googling a similar problem. I was looking for a simple lock for our cleaning cupboard after little fingers found a way in last week!

Following sashh's advice I went for these -www.eurofitdirect.co.uk/fixed-core-cupboard-lock - worked a treat, and it gives me an actual key to keep everyone out of the cupboard when they're not needed. Grin

OhLimpPricks · 22/08/2012 17:06

Do you have a kitchen door? Maybe a hook and eye fastening about 5 feet up would work? then you could unhook it easily with one finger, or with your nose/forehead if your hands are full?
