To want a foreign holiday?

Daisy0407 · 26/04/2012 15:47

We've gone camping and caravanning in the UK for the past 6 years. Spent 3 weeks on an uncomfortable caravan bed 6 months pregnant with my second DC.

Spent countless wet days spending a fortune to keep DC entertained in the holidays.

Okay, so it's expensive. But we wouldn't be doing it on credit. I want to spend a fortnight in the sunshine! Summer hols are ruled out because DH has to work most of them. So come October, I think, as a family, we deserve a bit of a break. (In the sunshine) So in Tenerife Grin

Fine if you can afford it - lucky you to have children so young you don't need to take them out of school.

I haven't managed to go abroad in 8 years - this is what comes of being married to a teacher

AmnesiaCustard · 26/04/2012 15:49

YANBU. Sometimes we all need a bit of sunshine!

degroote78 · 26/04/2012 15:50

Oh me too. Haven't been on holiday for four years. I so need one. Think everyone needs one holiday a year in the sun (in an ideal world), but everything's so bloody expensive at the mo it's just not an option for most any more.

curiositykitten · 26/04/2012 15:51

YANBU by wanting it, it would be unreasonable to 'expect' or 'demand' it iygwim?

As an aside, I went to Tenerife 10 years ago (pre-kids) in October and temperatures were still well into the 30s. I would say if sunshine holidays aren't something you're used to, it'll be a much better option going away then rather than summer anyway.

knowitallstrikesagain · 26/04/2012 15:52

YANBU to want a foreign holiday. If you can afford it and not put your family into debt to do it, why would it be unreasonable?

Mrsjay · 26/04/2012 15:53

yanbu i caravan and im now getting a bit sick of it tbh i would love a week in the sun i just dont know where i fancy because resort holidays dont appeal to me , and i hate sand so thats the beach out Hmm

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 26/04/2012 15:58

YANBU!! I love foreigh holidays, Tenerife rocks!

curiositykitten · 26/04/2012 16:00

Mrsjay - we also caravan/chalet (Haven/Haven-type holidays) and whilst it's totally fine and the kids enjoy it loads, I'd LOVE a week in the sunshine, and I don't even LIKE sunshine haha

cheekybarsteward · 26/04/2012 16:01

We joined some friends camping last year and it cost a fortune! Much more than we would have spent going to a self catering appt somewhere HOT and booking a cheap flight. When you are somewhere hot you don't need to constantly spend money entertaining everyone as the beach/pool are free.
All inclusive can be good and cost effective as long as you do your research.
Work out how much you normally spend and find something in Spain/Greece/Canaries for same amount and present DH with the evidence and have fun. :)

RosieBooBoo · 26/04/2012 16:16

We're not going on holiday this year as trying to save a deposit for a house and its crap! Especially this bloody horrible weather where we might get 2 days sunshine throughout the whole summer (Scotland)

hiddenhome · 26/04/2012 16:16

YANBU I haven't had a holiday abroad for years and I'm bored rigid with this country now. I don't like loads of heat and sun, but just a total change of environment would be nice.

Mrsjay · 26/04/2012 16:20

I think i want a different type of holiday self catering and camping is fine but TBH i think id like somebody else to feed us for a week do the dishes and we could just swan about Grin and a bit of sunshine would help not the beach though sand is evil Wink

SecretSquirrels · 26/04/2012 16:24

I'd rather stay at home than go camping.
It needn't be that much more expensive to go abroad and if you can go out of school holidays then it's usually a good 30% cheaper. If you find a large complex you need not spend any money at all on entertainment and if you go AI then you need virtually no spending money.
And you get to have a rest! Instead of all that cooking at tent erecting in the rain.

Mrsjay · 26/04/2012 16:26

Oh i dont tent i refuse to tent we caravan which is slightly better , dont get me wrong we have had some decent holidays towed abroad i just think i need a bit of a change ,

Shakirasma · 26/04/2012 16:42

YANBU! We go abroad every year because that is what we work for. We book up very soon after we get back each year as looking forward to that next holiday really is what motivates us to keep working hard and keep our chins up.

I am an expert holiday bargain hunter!

ENormaSnob · 26/04/2012 18:01

yanbu

I love camping but also love a fortnight in the sun.

Will be booking next years asap.

exexe · 26/04/2012 18:06

Yanbu we went Tenerife last year. We went with Ryanair and booked an apartment. We went one day before half term and it was reasonably priced then.

mamalovesmojitos · 26/04/2012 18:08

YANBU a week in the sun is good for the soul...nothing beats it in my book.

startail · 26/04/2012 18:12

UANBU

A week of being able to swim in the sea and pool when ever you want. Recharges the batteries like nothing else on Earth.

CheshireDing · 26/04/2012 18:16

YANBU. I am sick of this rain :( Apparently it's raining for 72 hours then sunny for 2 months, I mean how the hell can they know what the weather will be doing in 2 months. I don't believe it!

I love camping but am currently craving sunshine.

If you will not be in debt then go, don't know how you can wait until October though. Can you not go sooner? There seem to be some very cheap things on Teletext holidays website.

Lilka · 26/04/2012 18:24

YANBU, I did France in a caravan with my kids and I loved it. For some reason, it felt really different to caravan in England! The weather was brilliant! :) You can get pretty cheap caravan/tent deals in Europe, look around for them. Newspaper tokens sometimes cover operators who work in France etc. Although you may be wanting a proper hotel holiday, which I definitely can't afford, although I'm not bothered at the moment as I'm still comfortable enough in a caravan

cornflowers · 26/04/2012 18:33

My children just love Eurocamp/ Keycamp. They're all over Europe, especially France, Spain and Italy. It wouldn't be my choice, but the children always have such a wonderful time, with beaches nearby and usually a huge pool, entertainment, restaurants etc on site. They generally make lots of little friends and spend all their time swimming and riding their bikes around before a BBQ dinner. And dh and I get to sit in the sun with a book - or take turns to do so, anyway. Certainly not expensive, either. A week in a Eurocamp caravan in the south of France probably costs less than centre parks in the UK.

Daisy0407 · 27/04/2012 14:01

Good replies, thanks Smile

I'm in Scotland too, so can't do the touring Europe think. Well we could, but logistically it's a nightmare.

The DC are school age but we get 2 weeks off in October hence the chance for a holiday.

Who likes finding bargains. I found 14 nights in Tenerife, all inclusive for £2500. Thought that was reasonable?

OP posts:
Mrsjay · 27/04/2012 14:08

No its not Smilewhat age are your children daisy we have been to france im in scotland , Its fab you just have to break it up we took 2 days to get to calais be cold in october though unless you go south , we have been to normandy and britanay with the tourer ,

TheRealMrsHannigan · 27/04/2012 14:14

Exactly what Shakirasma said! I love my annual holiday, Canary Isalnds this year. If you decide on a location and a date, phone round the holiday companies getting quotes, use the cheapest quote to ring back the others and they often try very hard to beat the quote!

By doing that I've managed to get one week all inclusive 4* for DH, DD and I for £800 and some change :)
