to not 'get' soup

GnomeDePlume · 25/04/2012 13:40

Who looks at a bag of meat/vegetables and thinks 'what these need is pureeing then diluting'?

Am back working in an office again and surrounded by the sounds and smells of soup consumption.

I had forgotten how bad it is.

YABU - Think yummy French Onion soup with a giant crouton and melty cheese

Or Stilton and broccoli with loads of nice bread............or carrot and coriander.......mmmmmmmmm

Now you have made we want soup. I will have yours too - problem solved :)

madmouse · 25/04/2012 13:41

I like making it, dh and 4 yo ds love eating what I make, in vast quantities. The only thing I will eat that passes for soup is chicken noodle from a packet.

TheSinglePringleWillicopters · 25/04/2012 13:42

issi I agree. I hate the stuff

ToryLovell · 25/04/2012 13:42

Pros of soup

Warming, nourishing, easier to eat at work than a plate of meat and two veg

Cons

Its a bit boring

savoycabbage · 25/04/2012 13:42

Maybe you have never had nice soup. Some is horrid. Some is fabulous.

squoosh · 25/04/2012 13:43

I bloody love soup!

There are smelly stinky soups that should never be reheated in an office environment. Mainly fish based soups or cabbage based soups. It's just rude.

But I admit that I eat soup most days at work. It's a wonder food and the best thing ever if you're keeping an eye on your weight.

Mmmmm, soooup.

Lifegonewrong · 25/04/2012 13:43

Soup is all I have for my tea. Stop putting me off! Sad

CogitoErgoSometimes · 25/04/2012 13:45

YABU... Just made a terrific chunky soup for lunch. Tasty, cheap and filling. What's not to like?

squoosh · 25/04/2012 13:46

Oh and slurping is NEVER acceptable. Feel free to give them a moderate to heavy whack on the chops with your stapler.

Bearcrumble · 25/04/2012 13:47

Gazpacho.

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 25/04/2012 13:50

I love soup. I make the most amazing french onion soup with giant cheesy croutons.
But other soups are lovely too, they're filling, nutritous, cheap and easy. What's not to like if they're made well?

sarahtigh · 25/04/2012 13:53

good soup is great bad soup is vile cup of soup is an abomination

Soup keeps you full for longer, as mixed it stays in stomach longer than the same food eaten dry with a glass of water

which is why dieters are advised to have soup for lunch

LieInsAreRarerThanTigers · 25/04/2012 13:55

I prefer cake. But soup is goooooood.

ragged · 25/04/2012 13:56

yabvu, I love soup!

GnomeDePlume · 25/04/2012 13:56

What's not to like about soup?

  1. It's wet. Savoury food should be consumed with knife & fork or fingers. It should not be possible or necessary to consume savoury food with a spoon or straw.
  2. It's diluted food, my tastebuds are robust enough to be able to handle food without watering it down
  3. It smells

YABU, you aren't making good soup if you find it boring. Nom.

suburbandream · 25/04/2012 13:57

I love soup, I have it virtually everyday Grin. Vegetable mulligatawny today, deeeelish!!

exexe · 25/04/2012 13:58

YANBU! I don't get soup either. It's horrible stuff. I'd rather eat the veg.
Though I can have 'mealy' soups like chicken noodle but it has to have bits that I can pick up and eat.

YonWhaleFish · 25/04/2012 13:58

A lot of methods of treating vegetables before soupifying them actually enhance the flavour and intensify it, for example, roasting them.

YABU*. I have soup for lunch (usually from Pret) most days I am at work and usually have home-made (which is so much more than the sum of its constituent vegetables) on Saturdays. If I had a sandwich I would be asleep on my desk by 3pm with carb overload. In the summer I have salad but it's not really the weather for it right now.

  • unless it is fish soup and they are heating it in the microwave
GwendolineMaryLacey · 25/04/2012 13:59

I love soup. I also love the crusty bread and butter that I have with it.

SydSaid · 25/04/2012 14:01

Most food smells. It's part of the experience.

Okay, it is wet. So is stew and pasta sauce and gravy and curry sauce etc etc etc - do you take issue with them too?

The food might be watered down, but the flavour should more than compensate. if it doesn't - then the soup is badly made. If all you have ever had is badly-made soup then of course you won't like it!

GnomeDePlume · 25/04/2012 14:16

No, I dont like stews, casseroles etc and take a minimalist approach gravy and pasta sauces.

I get the idea of roasting vegetables etc but why then spoil the whole thing by mushing them up and diluting them?
