To think that spelling & grammar arent used at all anymore?

I understand that some people find spelling, grammar, reading etc difficult & to be honest i thought that was common these days but the more i look on my news feed about friends' status' & how hard it is to read what they have written because the spelling isnt good the more i think is it now down to the fact that shortening the words or making the words out how you think it is spelt is the norm?

For example, DD brought home a book that had been around all the children in her class. Kids took the book home with a teddy, parents write in the book to say what they did that evening or day. DD & i were reading through the comments and i struggled to read a few of them because the spelling was confusing and one of the comments made no sense whatsoever. Sausages was spelt "sassages", himself was written as "hiself". Am i being unreasonable to also feel very tempted to correct friends on facebook on their mistakes? Or am i strange?

P.S. Dont take this as a nasty post. I genuinely want opinions and thoughts. Not to be shot down.

I am honestly not saying this nastily, but did you proof-read your post?

FeakAndWeeble · 24/04/2012 20:19

Haven't read the OP. But your title should read 'aren't'.

Pedant

Havingaminutespeace · 24/04/2012 20:20

YANBU. IT drives me potty too. Although I'm trying and failing to sit on my hands and not point out all the mistakes in your post. Grin
I is a capital I when referring to a person, you've missed an apostrophe out of the aren't in your title and there's one in isn't too.
takes self off to pedants corner Grin

Emmielu · 24/04/2012 20:20

I had noticed that once i posted this & chuckled at myself! Grin hypocrite or what!

BarryBumlove · 24/04/2012 20:20

There are no full stops in your first paragraph. I think you need to look at yourself before criticising others.

AgentZigzag · 24/04/2012 20:21

Don't be silly, I try to use the proper spelling and grammar so that's put your theory out straight away.

What you really want to say is that you don't like it when people don't know they're wrong and so don't check.

And in that YABU, there are so many reasons why this might have happened. Would you be so judgy if the person suffered horrendous abuse when they were small and didn't go to school much, or would that be understandable?

It's not for you to judge.

LOL! Havingaminutespeace - thank you! see I don't mind people pointing it out to me because I'm confident that my main problem is the grammar. I'm fine writing it but typing it & it all goes out the window!

Haberdashery beat me to it.
I do agree that good spelling and grammar don't seem to be as importent to people as they used to be.

It's partly due to predictive text and text speak IMO as you don't have to think about it when you're writing something so you become lazy/used to it.

GateGipsy · 24/04/2012 20:23

OK either your OP is written in an ironical way, in which case well done. Especially the first paragraph where you don't use a single full stop, apostophe or upper case on the I.

Or

You're actually complaining about txt speak rather than grammar?

You know, when people write things like "Gng tmrw cnt wait gonna B wkd!"

southeastastra · 24/04/2012 20:23

it irks me when i see bad grammer of spelling on news websites and our local one has had quite a few lately!

or anything printed by a company on the website come to think of it. they need to employ proof readers

Kladdkaka · 24/04/2012 20:24

There's a stray apostrophe after 'status'.

Plus you've used speech marks instead of quotation marks.

BarryBumlove · 24/04/2012 20:24

'I'm confident that my main problem is the grammar'

Your confidence is misplaced.

Emmielu · 24/04/2012 20:24

AgentZigzag - thank you for that very shocking post. I hadn't thought of that no, but again thank you. Also, did you not read the last thing in my post "Don't take this as a nasty post" I in general DID NOT mean serious cases like you are describing, what i DID mean was in cases such as seeing something on Facebook, texts from friends, emails etc.

BeaMinor · 24/04/2012 20:25

*important
Note to self: proof read post when talking about spelling/grammar/proof reading!
Grin

Emmielu · 24/04/2012 20:26

GateGypsy - THAT'S THE ONE I MEANT! More to do with text speech. I can't word anything correct for toffee.

OP posts:
AgentZigzag · 24/04/2012 20:27

But you can't know all the reasons why someone doesn't set any store by the written word Emmie and you did post in AIBU, what did you expect

I'm sure you'd be surprised at the actual reasons why people don't.

AgentZigzag · 24/04/2012 20:28

And coming over all superior at textspeak is just pure snobbery.

BonnieBumble · 24/04/2012 20:29

I have always been rather embarrassed of my lack of grammar skills and posted for advice on this very subject recently. However on reading people's posts on FB I'm starting to wonder if I actually have cause for concern as some of the posts are so appalling that I can't actually decipher them!

I worked with someone once who would leave messages for me that I just couldn't read. They were littered with spelling mistakes and full of text speak even though text speak wasn't common then. I addressed it with her as I thought she might need training in this area but it turns out she was more than capable but found it quicker and easier to write this way. I do always pick people up on it because I find it annoying when I have to spend 20 minutes translating nonsense into something that resembles the English language.

And whats with people using "ent" instead of "isn't" and the latest one of "dat" instead of "that". I don't get it.

Kladdkaka · 24/04/2012 20:29

FeakAndWeeble, do you mean pendants' corner? :o

seoladair · 24/04/2012 20:29

The errors are stacking up nicely now.

HandMadeTail · 24/04/2012 20:30

Shakespeare didn't even spell his own name the same way all the time.

What's so great about spelling, as long as you can be understood?

And is grammar descriptive, or prescriptive? It can be argued that grammar describes the way language is used; it is not a set of rules which must be adhered to.
