to think that talk radio rots your brain less than (pop) music radio?

Despite being a lentil-munching feminist leftie, I regularly listen to LBC 97.3, which is full of right-wing loonies bellyaching about Europe, immigration, the good old days, feral youth and other bring-back-the-birch-Daily-Mail type stuff. I also have been known to listen to Jeremy Vine on Radio 2, a show which was beautifully described by another MN-er as 'the Daily Mail in audio format'. I don't know why I enjoy this rubbish but I do. My DP tells me that if you listen to all this tub-thumping stuff for long enough, you end up agreeing with that point of view. I disagree with him but feel that on balance there are probably much healthier things to listen to but my ears want what they want Smile

In the office I work in, the radio station of choice is HeartFM. I have found recently that I get far more wound up by the lyrics of the songs they play, most of which are about sex, cheating, getting naked, more sex, what the singer wants to do to someone else or utterly moronic drivel like the muppet who is 'lookin' for somethin' dumb ta do, hey baby, I think I wanna marry you'. I can feel my brain turning to mush as we speak Confused

I'm really not an old gimmer or a prude but honestly, this constant stream of rubbish can't do anyone any good At least with talk radio, you occasionally get to hear some interesting and thought-provoking opinions, or get to laugh at the more swivel-eyed contributions

What sort of drivel do you watch/listen to, by choice or otherwise? Smile

Another Radio 4 fan here. Definitely mind improving, not mind rotting.
I occasionally have to suffer radio 1 (thanks DCHmm) but my other alternate is Kerrang.
At work we solve the radio argument with Spotify.

GrimmaTheNome · 23/04/2012 19:25

Yes, a only mind fed on Radio 4 can dream up such an inventive NNGrin

'I enjoy listening to Nick Ferrari on LBC - it is like the Daily Mail comments section in audio! He does challenge the more idiotic callers though'

He's insufferable Eggy, but in a very enjoyable way. I love how naff he is, so dad-like calling male callers he agrees with 'matey' and 'sport' and 'buddy' Grin Some of his views are really foul though so I'm ashamed to admit I listen to him - only sharing this coz you're obviously a kindred spirit!

Oi Grimma! Angry

It's everything nothing to do with lack of imagination. The nn is like Radio 4 itself - informative and concise.

Honest. Grin

GwendolineMaryLacey · 23/04/2012 20:05

Nick Ferrari makes me want to put my ears in a pitbull's mouth. But he's strangely compulsive Blush.

I love Clivey, so glad he's back. And Petrie Hosken. Am rather fond of James O'Brien even though he's like a puppy :o

toofattorun · 23/04/2012 20:10

I love LBC 97.3! I like Nick Ferrari and Nick Abbott.

MrsBovary · 23/04/2012 20:11

I think I'd slightly prefer Talk radio to Heart FM.

We have Classic Fm on most of the time, as the children like it. But the ads can be quite irritating, and there's too much in the way of Harry Potter and Jurassic Park type themes played for my liking.

OrmIrian · 23/04/2012 20:13

R4 or R3, R5 sometimes and R6 are acceptable.

I used to despise R1. Until I listened to Heart and various similar shite. And then all of a sudden R1 seemed enlightened Hmm

toofattorun · 23/04/2012 20:15

I am so glad Clive Bull is back. We once had a conversation on air about what it is about Natasha Kaplinski's face that brings out the urge to want to slap her. Hard.

Lottapianos · 24/04/2012 07:29

Yay for the LBC fans! Im another Nick Ferrari hater who listens to him every morning without fail Blush

Also love Nick Abbot ( and his crazy sound effects!), Petrie Hosken and James O'Brien. Quite like Julia Hartley-Brewer too, she manages to stay civil even when she disagrees strongly with someone. I put James Whale in the Ferrari category - so obnoxious, so agressive but strangely compelling listening Hmm

GwendolineMaryLacey · 24/04/2012 07:49

I didn't want to admit that I liked James whale but I do! :o And Anthony Davis is lovely and shares my love of liners

toofattorun · 24/04/2012 07:51

I also had an argument with Ferrari because he was saying that its not possible to be in labour for hours and hours. I think he is very right-wing but like you said, he is good to listen to. Very funny man when callers get his name wrong!

toofattorun · 24/04/2012 07:55

Sorry I meant Anthony Davies not Nick Abbott. He is very good.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 24/04/2012 07:57

It's annoying. Sometimes I vow I will never ever listen to him again as he's such an arrogant git but when he's in the mood he's really funny and very good when people ring up to insult him, he takes it all on the chin.

But I never went to his first ever live show in Catford, no siree. And I haven't seen Steve Allen and James O'B at the Fairfield halls in Croydon. That would be very sad

MissBetsyTrotwood · 24/04/2012 09:21

We have a family friend helping us with some decorating next week and he's a big Nick Ferrari fan. Think I'll give him a try again. Does he clash with Woman's Hour? Grin

Was he the one who ran to be Conservative candidate for London Mayor last time?

toxtethogrady · 24/04/2012 10:10

Clive's back?
marvellous

RosieBooBoo · 24/04/2012 11:19

I hate talk radio! I also have hearing loss and unless i concentrate really hard i cant follow the conversations properly. I wish there was an music only station..

GwendolineMaryLacey · 24/04/2012 11:43

Sundays only, 7-10pm toxteth :)

Lottapianos · 24/04/2012 12:33

Gwendoline, you actually went to Nick Ferrari's live show???? I must have more details now! Was it a festival of utter hideousness or actually quite enjoyable in a very wrong way? Smile

Nothing wrong with going to see James O'Brien - he's very good fun, a proper lefty and a little bit dishy (disclaimer - I have a beard fetish). Steve Allen on the other hand - he really is unbearable, pompous but deathly dull with it

OP posts:
Lottapianos · 24/04/2012 12:51

Gwendoline, feel free to PM me if this is too embarassing! Grin

Music doesnt rot your brain. I flick between various music stations and it always lifts my mood.

I like Radio 4, too, though, so I can't comment on your low brow talk radio tastes Grin

All I know is that if I listn to Radio 5 for more than 5 mins I start to itch...
