to still be annoyed with Edwina Currie regarding fat people on TV over a week later

She has pissed me right off!

What the fuck difference does having fat people on TV make? I want to lose weight because I want to live long enough to see my DD grow up, to achieve my ambitions and I don't want people judging me on my weight or any of the social embarrassment or day in day out indignities that being fat lands you with. Against that backdrop of motivation WTF does seeing people on TV have to do with it?

She can also stick the whole fat people are too stupid to understand that they need to eat less calories where the sun don't shine. I have a Phd in physics from Oxbridge so I think we can assume I get that (and of course so does everyone else).

Why aren't people interested in solving the real problem? That fat people with all the motivation in the world, who totally understand the concept of calorie balance are still struggling to lose weight?

Anyway it's nearly a week since she was on the radio ruining my day so hopefully a cathartic rant will get me over it...

How can the government do anything about adult portion sizes? We sort of set those ourselves? Usually based on how much food we think will make us feel full.

Again what fraction of the obese population do you think genuinely doesn't understand that you need to eat less to lose weight?

what exactly is a 'tube of pasta'?

are we talking macaroni or penne?

I suppose what I am thinking about is what we perceive as normal. My DS for example is overweight but he is autistic and unlike many autistic children is almost compulsive about food. He won't stop because he is full although as a baby doing baby led weaning he did. By age 2-3 though he was finishing everything put in front of him (providing it was dry and nothing touched Grin).

I think some NT kids can be the same.

I have to make sure I have plenty of healthy foods for DS to snack on. This week Tesco have Cucumbers at 2 for £1 so he has six of these in the fridge and is going through one a day.

Adults are a different issue and a food addiction is/can be hard to deal with.
Binge Eating Disorder is on the rise. Sad

I think many obese people are in denial and like to think they are big due to genetic factors and I have genuinely heard many say "but I don't eat much I just have bad genes"

"Being 'fat' doesn't shorten your life, being obese does, not having any exercise and so does yo-yo dieting (as well as a multitude of other activities)."

True; but actually most people don't look "fat" until they are already clinically obese.

I lost weight last year. At my heaviest my BMI was 30 and body fat 40% so (borderline) obese by both body fat and BMI. I was a size 16 and although I was fat for me, others would not have described me as fat.

Saying that they have too eat less than a naturally thin person does just to maintain weight is showing that they DO understand that weight gain is tied to calorie intact not that they DONT get it.

It is perfectly true that some people can eat more calories and get away with it. That doesn't mean that obese people dont understand that in order for THEM to lose weight they need to eat less calories than THEY are currently eating.

They are simply expressing that life is unfair - which is certainly is.

The supermarkets are full of two boxes of doughnuts for 1 which doesn't help. I have genuinely wanted to buy a small treat for my DC's and have found it difficult to find something that doesn't come in a pack of 6 or more with a second box for free! Who need to buy 12 mini muffins at a time?

entropygirl · 23/04/2012 13:19

I dont think that making fatty food more expensive will help reduce obesity any more than making alcohol more expensive will stop people from suffering alcoholism.

It's a way of eating too. People I work with who are obese will typically eat a twix, muller light yoghurt, can of diet fizz, and a packet of crisps for dinner.

The people who are not obese will eat a sandwich an apple and have a cup of tea.

Guess who isn't hungry an hour later.

entropygirl · 23/04/2012 13:50

I have given up diet coke and chocolate on the basis of that concept...we shall see if this has any effect.

I certainly had what felt like a relapse over easter....it definitely feels like addictive behaviour to me.
