AIBU to not like the way my sil cares for her baby?

For a while now i have been worrying about how my niece is being handled.
She is 7 months but was a month premature.
My sil leaves her on the sofa unattented even though she can roll over & cannot even sit unaided yet-this is a big worry for me as i worry about her toppling over onto the floor!!
She also allows her 13 year old dc to carry my niece under her arm and run with her around this house & up the stairs!- she doesn't even tell her off.
My sil has even dropped her when playing seesaw without holding on to her.

Im very shocked that someone would handle a baby in this way and im unsure what to do as i cannot bear to see it any longer- does anyone have any advice?

can you have a word with your brother maybe

Heswall · 22/04/2012 15:58

Baby's bounce. Is there anything else going on that is a real issue ?

pumpkinsweetie · 22/04/2012 15:58

No because she is my Dhs sister

How many children does she have?

pumpkinsweetie · 22/04/2012 16:00

Four but the way in which her teenagers handle her is very worrying

I wouldn't interfere on the basis of what you have described.

squeakytoy · 22/04/2012 16:01

I would keep out of it to be honest.. she has already raised 3 babies sucessfully, so I would assume she knows what she is doing... you wont be thanked for poking your nose in.

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 22/04/2012 16:01

Yes - MYOB. She has managed to raise the others without your 'help' I am sure she will manage to raise this one as well.

Keep out of it!

Sofa not a brilliant idea...but I really fail to see the big thing

pumpkinsweetie · 22/04/2012 16:03

Was just looking for advice and was just wondering whether i should do anything but it sounds to me like i might be over reacting.
I suppose because i never left my babys at this age unattended on a sofa or allowed them to be carryed in such a way im obviously seeing it as wrong.

"My sil has even dropped her when playing seesaw without holding on to her"

accidents happen to everyone

mynewpassion · 22/04/2012 16:05

Agree with everyone else. Keep out of it. This is not her first child and accidents do happen.

Northernlurker · 22/04/2012 16:06

What you mean she's encouraging her older children to play with their youngest sibling Hmm Yes I agree, very worrying!

Look OP - babies are tougher than you think. This child is NOT being abused. Keep your nose out.

MrsShitty · 22/04/2012 16:07

A friend of a friend did that with her sisters baby...leaving he on the sofa and she fell right off one day when I was there. I felt AWFUL. This woman is bt lazy and I wanted to tell her sister who is a totally different type. I dont think YABU OP....but then I also know a lot of Mums and Dads who are much less nervy than I am about DC. ...it's hard to tell what's a real risk and what isn't.

pumpkinsweetie · 22/04/2012 16:08

Thanku for the advice everyone, i will keep my nose out as you have suggested.
Was just worried thats all

i don't think yabu either OP, but i'm not really sure if there is anything you can do as she will probably do the "it's my 4th, i know what i'm doing"

there is a very real risk of her child falling off the sofa.
I've done it before (before i knew ds2 could roll!) and I am sure loads of other people have, but generally once you know your child is mobile you stop putting them on high surfaces don't you? it's just an accident waiting to happen tbh

I can imagine how a thread would go if someone came on and admitted to leaving their baby on the sofa even though it could roll off, or playing see-saw without holding on (why? why would you do that?) etc etc... there would be calls for SS to be involved and all sorts

Maybe you could talk to her and just say "are you not scared she will fall off?" or something like that next time you see her on the sofa?

thisisyesterday · 22/04/2012 16:13

btw i am generally of the "benign neglect" school of parenting and do really leave my kids to get on with things.

but in this case there are real risks that the mother isn't just ignoring, she's actively seeking out.

why place your rolling baby on the sofa when she could go on the floor?
why not hold her hands when playing see-saw?
13 yr old carrying her isn't an issue... but running up the stairs?

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 22/04/2012 16:15

Falling of the sofa is worrying as she should know better.

But the rest?

Small siblings in large families get very used to be carted around by older children.

They like it.
