to think this is purely due to glasses or lack of?

My ds has worn glasses 24/7 since he was a baby, for the last week he's been trying contact lenses. Today, we went round the shops and he was wearing his contacts.

In 3 shops at the checkout, the women stood next to us in the queue, commented on what a good looking boy he was: 'sorry hope you don't mind me saying but you are such a lovely looking boy'.

My son was very embarrassed, and I was very flattered and thanked them.

My dd has always had strangers making comments of this type to her, but never has anyone ever commented on my ds before.

AIBU to think that's because people before now have always just seen glasses Sad and now they see my gorgeous son?

Maybe it was just chance? The vast majority of children are not attractive enough to have a constant steam of "YOU LOOK SO BEAUTIFUL" after they're past the new baby stage. If you now suddenly keep getting it commented on, THEN maybe consider that it's the glasses. One comment is not proof of anything.

Or maybe it was the glasses - but maybe the frames were unflattering, the glass hid his eyes or any number of things. It doesn't make people prejudiced against glasses. I find glasses very nice looking when they suit the person's face.

It's not like a wheelchair where it's an odd sight to see, is it?

Cantabide · 21/04/2012 12:30

Could well be, it was just the fact that it was 3 comments today in 3 different shops.

It will be interesting to see if future outings come with more comments.

And they were all the same comment?

Was there anything different? Different hair etc?

Maybe it's the glasses. But it's okay, there's nothing wrong with being only attractive but not attractive enough to get commented on, is there? Grin

Or could it be that he felt more confident without the glasses, and that showed through?

Cantabide · 21/04/2012 13:31

No hair the same haircut that he has done exactly the same every six weeks. Done about 2 weeks ago so in not new haircut stage but not in time for a haircut stage.

All 3 apologised for feeling that they had to say something, (which experience tells me with dd is normal, i.e. I'm sorry to inturept but I have to say...) what a handsome young man you are, what a lovely looking boy you are, you are such a smart young man.

He was dressed in football strip, so not smart outfit.

Maybe it is confidence, although at the moment he's feeling concsious without his glasses on, and prescription currently is not perfect so he has a bit of a scowl going on (only noticiable as his mother), just looks like moody young man to rest of the world Grin.

What are his eyes like though?

My BIL wears glasses, he's a fairly average looking bloke - but on the odd occasion he wears contacts, he has really really nice eyes. You just don't see them when he's wearing glasses and it really does make a difference to how he looks.

Might be one reason why.

Cantabide · 21/04/2012 13:41

He does have big blue eyes with long lashes, but without contacts/glasses his eye turns in, whereas with contacts and glasses he looks straight ahead.

It must be a case of not having bottle bottom glasses on his face he looks better.
