AIBU re wallpaper, or is DH?

We are planning a feature wall on our bedroom when we redecorate, and unfortunately the wallpaper we like is £95 a roll, and we'd need three, we think, so a not insignificant spend.

The wall in question has the chimney breast and two alcoves either side - where the two freestanding wardrobes would go. DH has suggested we leave 'holes' in the wallpaper behind the wardrobes to save money on wallpaper - as he says nobody would see it anyway.

This whole idea makes my teeth itch frankly. It would surely be more trouble than it was worth to leave these holes? I doubt it would save buying a whole new roll of wallpaper either. I think it's madness.

AIBU?

A few years ago, I got a bonus from work and spent it on two rolls of hideously expensive wallpaper, and it makes me happy every single day when I wake up and look at my gorgeous wallpaper, so go for it. And, yes, paper behind the wardrobes. Things change and you might needs to sell your house or get new wardrobes, and then it would be a right PITA to have gaps behind them.

PatronSaintOfDucks · 21/04/2012 22:33

Just wallpaper the chimney breast. Or ditch the whole idea. Put a nice picture on the chimney breast instead. Feature walls are hideous. Grin Sorry.

Put your wallpaper wherever you like OP. It's your home and your choice to spend the money on something you want. If you will feel better to have the whole wall papered (which I think is a good idea because you may change or move the furniture at some point) then do it.

If you don't then it will annoy you every time you think about it. And if something is worth doing it is worth doing properly.

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 22/04/2012 13:00

And I'm adding myself to the list of people who want to see the wallpaper linked here please Grin

AgentProvocateur · 22/04/2012 15:19

Here's where I got my expensive wallpaper from Mine was bought a few years ago and isn't shown here (and wasn't £300 a roll!), but I thought you might like to see some really expensive stuff.

Flisspaps · 22/04/2012 15:26

sarahtigh · 22/04/2012 15:39

paper behind the wardrobes you may not plan on moving but if you do you will never match it up and will have to re-do all wall same if anytihng happenned to wardrobe you may never get one same size also from certian angles may see blank space it will annoy you do the job properly or not at all

kickassangel · 22/04/2012 16:05

I'm joining in the chant of 'do the wall, do the wall'

I also LOVED some of those wallpapers from agent - especially the 500 quid a roll one!

noddyholder · 22/04/2012 16:11

Timorous beasties is beautiful but I think that sort of paper looks best in a big room that can take it on all the walls or a small room like a loo where it is a statement and you really 'see' it. Singles walls a la 60 minute makeover really are a fad that thank goodness is over.

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 22/04/2012 16:28

LOL at your DH - Grin

Tell him to stop being such a numpty!! Of course you can't do that!!

Apart from the fact that it would drive me insane knowing we'd done that, you'd never be able to move the wardrobes and should you have to sell the house (you just never know) you'd have to redecorate. It would be a monumental hassle to do in the first place!!

Do take note of what TrickyWoo said though and use the 3 rolls at the same time to minimise the 'finding the matching bit' waste!!

Enjoy your wall :)

trixymalixy · 22/04/2012 16:40

I was going to use the timorous beasties thistle wallpaper and then they used it on a crappy STV show with Michelle frikking McManus so I couldn't use it and haven't seen any I liked as much ever again, .

trixymalixy · 22/04/2012 16:40

I bought timorous beasties cushions instead!

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 23/04/2012 00:29

You wouldn't have to redecorate if you moved, because the buyers probably wouldn't look behind the wardrobes or see the space where the wallpaper should be until after you had sold, completed and gone with your wardrobes.

But you should expect a thread on here from your buyer complaining that they bought the house because they fell in love with the beautiful designer wallpaper in the main bedroom but now the wardrobes were gone they have six feet of wood chip where the wardrobes used to be and one foot of beautiful wallpaper above it.

They would hate you forever. You can't have that.
