To wonder what's wrong with giving DC Parmesan?

SiL tonight refused to give her DC Parmesan on their pasta - she told them she doesn't give them it unless its cooked. Confused
Is she being precious or is there a health risk to Parmesan?
Her DC are 5 & 4 btw.

And I'm not bothered if she does give it or not, I'd just never heard of this before!

One vote for precious.

HOMEMADECHUTNEY · 20/04/2012 20:11

No, she's being ridiculous.

NarkedPuffin · 20/04/2012 20:11

Plain odd.

DonInKillerHeels · 20/04/2012 20:11

Seriously? She's a total loon!

Iteotwawki · 20/04/2012 20:12

A second vote for precious, unless it's made with unpasteurised milk. In which case still voting for precious!

Lovetats · 20/04/2012 20:12

Eh? Cooked Parmesan? She's a nutter!

GavisconJunkie · 20/04/2012 20:13

If they were tiny I'd understand salt content. Some properly posh parmesan isn't pasteurised, but unlikely and precious anyway.

StarshitTerrorise · 20/04/2012 20:14

Salt?

tartyflette · 20/04/2012 20:14

errmmm -- i think Italian children are given parmesan on their pasta as a matter of course. She's an idiot.

NimpyWindowmash · 20/04/2012 20:14

Someone once said, once they are past the age of 1, you can give them everything except gin. I tend to stick with that.
So, yeah, it's bonkers

mrspnut · 20/04/2012 20:15

She's being precious, my 5 year old nibbles bits off the block of Parmesan.

NarkedPuffin · 20/04/2012 20:15

From NHS pregnancy advice:

You can eat hard cheeses such as cheddar, parmesan and stilton, even if they're made with unpasteurised milk. Hard cheeses don't contain as much water as soft cheeses so bacteria are less likely to grow in them

Scootergrrrl · 20/04/2012 20:15

DD, four at the time, once refused to eat her pasta at a friend's house because they'd put grated Cheddar not parmesan on it and THAT WASN'T THE RIGHT CHEESE (poncey child). So another vote for precious.

headfairy · 20/04/2012 20:16

legally all cheese in the EU has to be made with pasteurised milk. Another vote for pointless preciousness here!

headfairy · 20/04/2012 20:17

scootergrrrl, I only give my dcs cheddar on their pasta because parmesan is flaming expensive

CremeEggsandHam · 20/04/2012 20:18

Eh?! Never heard of that before. My two (aged 4 and 8) both love parmesan on their pasta.
I vote for your friend's bonkers. Grin

CremeEggsandHam · 20/04/2012 20:19

Sorry, I meant SIL, not friend. YANBU, still a vote for bonkers here!

GavisconJunkie · 20/04/2012 20:19

Headfairy Tesco sells Brie & Parmesan made in France & Italy with unpasteurised milk. They have warning stickers on them.

BobbysBeardOfWonder · 20/04/2012 20:20

Grin Glad its not just me then! My DD practically lives off cheese, so I was a bit Hmm Confused
I wonder what I'll say once my DD is old enough to ask such questions herself... Wink

So the unpasteurised Camembert I saw for sale in 'Trose last week must be bootleg, then headfairy? I think the French might have a leetle something to say if the EU tried to ban unpasteurised cheese. Many of them consider it as a mark of quality if it says Lait Cru on the label. Fyi, you can even buy unpasteurised MILK in some French supermarkets. (and I do)

jamaisjedors · 20/04/2012 20:22

What do you think French and Italian kids eat? Do you think we have warning signs on cheese fgs!

PurpleRomanesco · 20/04/2012 20:22

The only reason I don't put Parmesan on DSs pasta is because it smells like old baby vomit and I tastes the same I would imagine.

YANBU though.

DonInKillerHeels · 20/04/2012 20:23

DS has been eating unpasteurised camembert and brie since before he was 1. He's fine.

jamaisjedors · 20/04/2012 20:23

cross post

5madthings · 20/04/2012 20:26

oh god mine have all had parmesan and 'mouldy' cheeses right from weaning at 6mths, we blw and they basically had what we had, my kids all love pasta with ham and peas and smelly sauce, basically blue cheese, melted down with some cream, its an easy and yummy dinner!
