Would you report someone that lied about their address on school admissions form?

We live in a town where school admissions is very competitive. Our DS had to go to school 40 mins walk away (we didnt own a car at the time) even though there were 4 closer schools to our home, one just 5 mins walk away.
I know of someone who has recently got their child into an 'outstanding' school by putting their business address as their home address.
I really feel so uneasy about it. I know it's not really any of my business, but I feel so badly for the child that didn't get into that school, even though they lived closer than this family. The school is near 2 council estates and it makes me so mad to think that the parents of the child that missed out could have jobs to go to or don't drive and now because of these parents 'stealing' their place, they might have to fork out money for child care so they can get to work on time or have to go further to the next school.
The mum is a SAHM and the next closest school is 'good' so it probably wouldn't massively inconvenience her her DD had to go there.
WIBU to report it?

You are pleased at the thought that a family will have to share space with liars cheats and fraudsters just because they are middle class?

What an odd and horrible thing to say.

I'm firmly on the side of reporting, but I'd rather my child shared a school with children of parents who care enough about their education that they will do what it takes to get a good one, instead of parents that couldn't care less where there children go as long as its close.

No. My best friend lied (she would've taken a place over my DS). Someone wrote a letter to admissions and the place was withdrawn. She thought it was me, accused me (via FB Hmm) and has never spoken to me again.

That was 4 years ago.

She also told all the other mums at school who all froze me out and she told all her kids who go to school with my kids, who have bullied my kids ever since.

Admissions wouldn't tell her it wasn't me as then she could accuse everyone until she found the "author". So my word against hers and I just chose to remain silent rather than protest my innocence (I obvs dealt with the bullying through school).

I later found out it was a friend who had left the area but bore a massive grudge (her DD didn't get in a year before).

Not worth the heartache IMO.

Outraged - I have nothing against the middle classes, but I dislike the idea of any group claiming a school as their own. I think it would be much better to have a lottery for all primary schools, with sibling places for subsequent children.

It would be much simpler and noone can claim it isn't fair. Having schools that serve the wealthy and schools that serve local authority housing is morally reprehensible.

sensuallettuce - did you dob her in though?

Also - once a child has started school the place will not be withdrawn, however the place was obtained.

I don't think anyone claims schools as their own, that's why there's admissions criteria, and that's why people shouldn't lie to get their child in. The vast majority of parents just want the best education they can get for their dc, but lying to get that is wrong.

sensuallettuce · 20/04/2012 20:21

Coconutty - it is here. They would not withdraw a child from a school when the child has started even on the first day - the lady from admissions told me that.
