just trying to write a list of all the things i need to get buy or do before we go to cyprus at the end of may.

so far have booked the airport parking, and found three bottles of almost empty suncream

anyway, i was thinking should i pack a few of those kelloggs mini variety cearals.
we are staying in an apartment for the week.

we usually stay in a hotel but this was the best deal.

Not tight-arsed at all! I usually take tea bags/dried milk and a few non-perishable things - you never know if you'll be delayed etc. Plus if the DCs love cereal it's good to take some, it's usually eye-wateringly expensive abroad.

diabolo · 19/04/2012 17:34

I once took a pack of Weetabix. The we discovered the baker about 1km away who makes fresh pastries every morning for 50 cents each

So now we just stuff ourselves with them. Grin

Debsbear · 19/04/2012 17:39

Tight arsed to buy Kellogs mini - variety packs? You must be loaded!! Wink I'd be sticking to large box of tesco cornflakes!!

ragged · 19/04/2012 17:46

For tight arse reasons perfectly acceptable. If it was just because you didn't want to try local food I'd say it was pretty lame.

tinymouse · 19/04/2012 18:04

oh they were buy one get two free in tescos. as i would never normally get the mini packs!

Grin

ok i shall take your advice then.
and pack some.
just have these feeling i'll get my suitcase searched and i'll be Blush when they open it and loads of food coes out lol
i'll be sweating in the que lookiing like a drug smuggler lol

any other tips on things i should pack food wise?
we would only have breakfast lunch or snacks from the apartment.

we dont drink tea suburban, so no point in tea bags.
but what other things do you pack.

Last year I took a box of ice poles with me, saved us a fortune in buying ice lollies for the DCs all day.
Also bought a little empty toiletries travel pack which I decanted fairy liquid and kitchen cleaner into the mini bottles to use for washing up etc.

Sirzy · 19/04/2012 21:33

I always take variety pack, tea bags, coffee, sugar and toilet paper with me!

TastesLikePanda · 19/04/2012 21:36

I always take pot noodles non-perishable snacks with me on holiday.

One of my favourite memories was sitting on the balcony of my v swish wedding night hotel room, in my wedding finery, eating pot noodle a snack with my new DH

trixymalixy · 19/04/2012 21:37

We took a whole suitcase of food with us last time we went on holiday!! In fairness DS does have multiple allergies so we have to, but there was room for a wine box or two. Saved us a blooming fortune, as we were skiing so drinks prices can be ridiculous.

NorbertDentressangle · 19/04/2012 21:39

They must take up so much room though!

When we go S/C one of the things we take is mixed herbs just to add a bit of flavour to anything we make without having to buy a whole pack.

Anyway, we once had our bags searched at the airport and they pulled out this clingfilm wrap of dried, green leaves (ie. the herbs) and I just had a "OMG Shock we are going to be locked up..they'll never believe that they're herbs" moment.

They didn't bat an eyelid!

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 19/04/2012 21:42

I take loads of stuff with us when we go, even if we go all inclusive or full board, as my 2 youngest are quite fussy and also so that I always have snacks on me in case they're hungry when we're out and about.

We're also off on holiday at the end of May and I'll probably take breadsticks, mini boxes of raisins, a couple of packs of biscuits, a jar of marmite (!!) and other bits and pieces

Jakadaal · 19/04/2012 21:44

Not sure where you are staying Tiny but in Paphos there are 1 euro shops (Poundland) and also the British shop where you can get ice pops, cereals etc. I found suncream really expensive so tend to stock up here (Boots Soltan is half price at the mo).

When we go self catering I take ice cube bags, cereals, biscuits, coffee filters and also my own mug as the apts tend to give you these tiny cups that hold next to nothing Grin

ENormaSnob · 19/04/2012 21:50

When we were children and money was tight my mother used to take loads of food to save money. She would take packets of soup and jelly, tea and coffee, pasta - probably loads more I can't remember. She also used to take a cool bag with milk and juice which she froze and meat like bacon and sausages and cooked meat for sandwiches. The frozen milk etc kept the rest chilled and was just about defrosted when we got there.

Tesco also have Garnier suncream at less than half price at the moment (about £6 I think).

delurked · 19/04/2012 22:12

YANBU at all! One of my favourite memories of family holidays when I was a child is me and my brother working our way through a variety pack - it was a real treat as we didn't usually have coco pops etc at home. Was always disappointing to get to the last day and be left with the cornflakes though.

rhondajean · 19/04/2012 22:16

We only holidayed in Scotland in caravans when I was little, but the two things I do remember from those holidays were the treats of the Kellogg's mini packs and tinned potatoes.

I have no memory of anything we did on the holidays, where we went, what we saw - but I remember eating them and they both make me ridiculously giddy quarter of a century later Grin

AlbertoFrog · 19/04/2012 22:28

Savoury rice and packets of pasta in sauce don't take up much room and for some reason taste much nicer eaten on a balcony with the sun shining down on you.

Happy holidays. Wish it was meEnvy

chunkythighs · 19/04/2012 22:43

Ah this brings back memories of my very first experience of a holiday abroad. Spain in the 70's, I was 7 and thought I was so exotic.......until my mother pulled out a bags of spuds and carrots from the case.......Hmm

Do any of you guys have any baggage limits? I struggle to keep within the allowance with just my clothes, toiletries and shoes.

squeakytoy · 19/04/2012 23:03

Not unreasonable at all.

I take teabags, coffee, warburtons bread, butter, mugs (I hate the tiny cups you get in s/c), sugar, crackers, cheese, cup a soups, and black pepper.

I dont really cook when we go away, but its nice to have something to snack on mid afternoon.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/04/2012 23:06

We're going All Inclusive to Majorca in August.
I'll be taking a catering pack small bottle of Heinz Tomato Ketchup for DS who eats dinner with his sauce.

Anyone who tries to consiscate it in customs will feel my wrath. Hmm

trixymalixy · 19/04/2012 23:07

Chunky thighs, we take 3 suitcases between the 4 of us. Two for clothes etc and one for food. Technically we could take 4 as the kids also get a baggage allowance.

ratspeaker · 19/04/2012 23:23

Last hols my sis and I between us took as essentials 5 packs of individual coffee filters, sugar ( cubes are the best when traveling ), salt, pepper, mint tea and redbush tea, cheap washing up liquid, washing up sponge, tea towel.
All of which could be left behind in there was any left
If we remember we'll take a wee bit vinegar
we also tend to leave any shampoos, conditioner, suncream, paperbacks behind at end of holiday-
gives more baggage allowance in suitcase for wines etc

Bogeyface · 19/04/2012 23:27

I think you are an idiot for packing variety boxes, they cost a fortune per gram and take up more space than say, a pack of weetabix!

Take all the grub you can pack and legally take into the country, especially anything you are not sure you can get when you are there but you know the kids will eat if you are stuck for a supper or brekkie. Marmite is a must for us!

Whatmeworry · 19/04/2012 23:30

Why anyone would take voluntarily British food to Europe always amazes me, I knew people who took baked beans to France on holiday. To France
