To think that Dartford is not in North London?

EXmrsmascarahead · 19/04/2012 17:31

It's not is it? The only way to get it in north London is to turn the map upside down

So if my geography is correct then why has my DH Accepted a job working in North London to be then told by the company that he will be working in Dartford?

WIBU to send the company a map marking where Dartford is in relation to North London?

Ther are major works on the M1 as well and have been for the last 2 years fgs and then when you join the M25 there is widening works going on. I am not sure when it's completed

AutumnLady · 19/04/2012 18:07

Definitely in Kent, I went to school there! That type of journey will not be pleasant tbh as there are loads of roadworks and the tunnel/bridge get quite jammed. Sorry I can't offer better news :(

Agincourt · 19/04/2012 18:09

If anything ever happens on the crossing you can be held up for hours. I came up here (bedford) to view a house and it took me 7 hours to get back into kent as something had happened on the crossing, they had closed it i think, and the traffic just backed up. They had to open one side to both ways of traffic in the end. I am sure that was a very bad day, but I would bear all this in mind.

What sector is he working in? construction?

EXmrsmascarahead · 19/04/2012 18:12

He works in the water industry.

This job is looking less likely to happen,

It would be grim, yes. On a good day, 30mins. On a bad day, potentially hours.

Dartford would be jct 2 off the M 25 and then a short journey along the A2

runningforthebusinheels · 19/04/2012 18:24

Dartford is North Kent, definitely - could be an admin error/typo I suppose? It's just outside the Greater London border.

Sorry to be (among) the bearers of bad news op :(

AutumnLady · 19/04/2012 18:44

It also depends where in Dartford he would be working as it could potentially be another 20/25 mins from the tunnel. And Dartford has a very crappy one way system with lots of roadworks at present

NorthernChinchilla · 19/04/2012 19:46

Yep, it's definitely Kent.
We do the journey from very near Dartford (few miles away) to the North West (North Lancashire) on a very regular basis, and have done for years.

Dartford to M1 junction would take an hour on a clear run. However, the bridge is a massive pinch point, even more so now they've upped the toll to £1.50. Journey up North takes, with one stop and done in the evening, 5 hours on a good journey. There is always a chunk of the M1 being dug up, and then you've got going round Birmingham (taking the toll road at £5.50 or risking the M6) and then Stoke, where there's always a traffic jam, and quite often over the ship canal at Manchester.

Done at night, it can be 5 hours- in the holidays, or if any of the above screws up, it can be grim.

Really sorry.

HoldOnWoody · 19/04/2012 20:38

Not in London. Nor is Brighton, Hertfordshire or Hampshire. But you'd be surprised how many 'Londoners' are out there travelling the world! I met too many to mention. Someone said to me once, "you must meet Ms London, she's from there too", so when I enquired she said, "yes, I live in London", I asked what part and she replied, "Hertford". I pointed out that it is not in even in London let alone North London. She sheepishly said, "well, it is north of London" Hmm

Voidka · 19/04/2012 20:42

Stansted is a London airport Wink
And Luton

Auntiestablishment · 19/04/2012 20:45

There's not another, totally unknown, Dartford somewhere in Herts is there?

Overtiredmum · 19/04/2012 20:50

I live just outside Dartford, and although its quite a good place to live, I wouldn't relish that commute to work. I work in Canary Wharf, but I work evenings so drive in, but the traffic isn't too bad, but then I am going against the rush hour.

The Dartford Tunnel can be a nightmare, usually once or twice a week there are problems.

EXmrsmascarahead · 19/04/2012 20:58

Its not looking good then.

Thankfully he only has to use the tunnel twice in the week, once on a Monday morning about 7am and then again on the friday hopefully about 2pm (if he is allowed to leave site early enough to get home at a reasonable hour).

He has decided he is going down there next week to see how it goes, if its as bad as he thinks and all of you say then he will have to rethink things.

I think the only good thing he has found about all this is he gets to go camping (cheaper than B&Bs) which is something he enjoys.

I am also pleased to see that I am not crap at geography. Grin

EnjoyResponsibly · 19/04/2012 21:52

Does he have to travel by car? From Ebbsfleet and also Gravesend and trains back down the line you can get the high speed train into London, and then travel out to where you are.

runningforthebusinheels · 19/04/2012 22:27

Good luck for your dh OP - so he's staying down Mon-Fri? That's definitely do-able - he will queue for the tunnel on a Fri pm, but you'll never escape that I'm afraid. He should order a Dart-Tag - no fumbling for change at the crossing.

Glittertwins · 19/04/2012 22:31

We live close to the m1/m25 junction and it takes us about an hour to get to Bluewater shopping centre just over the Dartford crossing and this is not rush hour either.

LaurieFairyCake · 19/04/2012 22:31

Going down Monday to Friday much better. Hope he's got a safe camping place.

Gumby · 19/04/2012 22:34

I always thought dartford was west Kent
Margate east Kent
Maidstone mid Kent
Not sure about north or south Kent Grin

thebody · 19/04/2012 23:13

BORING as most of us in real world ( out of London) couldn't give a fuck where what's us name us!

mirry2 · 19/04/2012 23:37

you are very rude thebody. Wh are you even reading this thread?

LaurieFairyCake · 19/04/2012 23:41

The OP is up north fuckwit. Read the fucking thread.

2ticks · 20/04/2012 00:44

I thought you meant a daily commute - that would be hideous. Monday - Friday would definitely be do-able. Has he done that kind of 'away in the week' work pattern before?
