I'm being v unreasonable but want to moan anyway...

I'm a boss and I treat my staff well, everyone has had a cost of living increase every year no matter what the financial climate, I have not had a pay rise for several years to fund this. We fund car parking and pay well. When there are stressful periods we try to soften the blow with "treats" in the office (I had hand made cupcakes delivered at Easter) and most of the time there is a general feeling of family.

BUT there are two or three people who are never happy no matter what.

I know staff always criticise how you run the business and have a moan behind your back but its getting to me today.

REMEMBER your Boss has feelings too

Please don't flame me.

They don't know when they are well off, some people.

Bambino81 · 19/04/2012 10:16

peugotgringo · 19/04/2012 10:17

Can I come and work for you, pretty please???

Mrsjay · 19/04/2012 10:17

you sound a lovely boss Smile
but tbh some people are never happy about anything , you could have people to fan them while they work and they would still moan about something .

SarahDoctorIndyHouse · 19/04/2012 10:19

And don't get me started on ex gratia days off to get over split uop with short term boyfriend, time off to help friend start car; changing my own day off to accommodate their lack of planning......

EasilyBored · 19/04/2012 10:22

You can only create an environment where people can be happy, you can't make them happy. Don't let it get you down. Some people are just miserable.

Babylon1 · 19/04/2012 10:23

You could have a gold plated halo permanently hovering around your head, fart little bubbles of perfume periodically, and treat all of your employees like little angels; and there would still be someone found something to complain about.

You sound like a lovely person to work for; some people don't realise they are lucky to even have a job, let alone a nice boss.

YANBU xx

I do think that sometimes you can do too much and be too flexible as a boss and then the staff can think they are entitled to all the flexibility and expect more.

Jux · 19/04/2012 10:30

You mean you don't have people peeling grapes?????? You sound exactly like my cousin who runs his own family business with about 10 staff. He's thoroughly unreasonable too Wink

flibbertywidget · 19/04/2012 10:34

you sound like a good boss. There are always people in every organisation who do nothing but bitch and moan. Remember they are probably crap in bed and generally unhappy with their lot.

I work for a very large organisation which is pretty damn good to us and some people here, do not know how bloody lucky they are.

stuff 'em and go and buy some more cake :-)

UANBU
I'm a SAHM so no boss to be sorry for, but the crap DDs HT has to put up with is ridiculous!

People seem totally incapable of putting themselves in anyone else's shoes or doing the simplest sums.

They moan continuously about things that would require the teachers never to see their own DCs and money to grew on trees.

I'm bored of being a SAHM, can I have a jobGrin

peskimo · 19/04/2012 10:40

some people are just negative. but they may have stuff going on in their lives that they don't know how to articulate, and it might come out to their workmates as 'moaning about work'

god, can't you get an in-house therapist or something, call yourself a caring boss??? Grin Wink

I think this is why it can be a risk to hire young people

Well that's made me bristle today. Where in the OP does it mention age of employees? Why have you decided that only older people have experience of both bad and good bosses? I'm 28 and I've had both I consider myself young. My current boss is lovely.

Wrongmoreoftenthannot · 19/04/2012 10:56

Loving the idea of an in-house therapist!

Its fair enough that people have lives out of work with all the stresses etc that go with it, and I encourage people to come and talk to me if they need to (totally aware that sometimes they don't want to share with me).

Its a difficult balance to get right when you want staff to be happy and feel secure in their positions here without them taking the mickey!

I agree about the money growing on trees comment startail its a common theme here too. Usually people helping themselves to things that they think we won't miss (stationary normally). Also things like "my mouse is broken I need a new computer...."

Gosh its all coming out now Blush

Having said that most are a really good lot who work amazingly hard and are fantastic at what they do. Just hate being bitched about behind my back

YANBU. Sister is a manager of an autistic unit and she says the adults are far worse than the kids!

Wrongmoreoftenthannot · 19/04/2012 10:59

Viv and Yon actually interesting that you both say what you do.

We have had real trouble with youngsters (18-25) in the past especially if it is their first real job. Mainly they find it hard to understand what is acceptable and not in a work place (we are a professional office) and there is a real sense of entitlement.

But the main culprit here is an older guy (45ish)

OP posts:
YonWhaleFish · 19/04/2012 11:01

TBF I have seen awful behaviour from people starting their first professional job, perhaps that's what you meant then viv?

Equally I've seen awful entitled behaviour from older colleagues who take the piss, and make up their own hours.

Wrongmoreoftenthannot · 19/04/2012 11:03

Yon - Before I worked here the PA used to go out at 10am to get her hair done and come back after lunch when the boss was out......

WhaleOilBeefHookedIWill · 19/04/2012 11:03

Where I work we love our boss and always tell her how lucky we are.

YonWhaleFish · 19/04/2012 11:04

wrong Shock wtf?

Wrongmoreoftenthannot · 19/04/2012 11:09

Also they used to drink wine and beer upstairs when he was out and some people got caught shagging by other staff.

I'm all for a happy relaxed working environment but even I thought that was as step too far!!
