calpol before a doctors appointment

My DS3 (age 3) has a doctors appointment this afternoon. At the moment he is sparko on the sofa with a raging fever, cough and runny nose. I am having an argument with my nan over whether he should have calpol to take his fever down and feel better before he goes.
My argument is that the doctor can see or hear any infection, so there's no point in making him suffer, her argument is that the doctor needs to see him at his worst because calpol turns him into a mad thing that runs about not looking ill at all!

Bit of background info:
DS has a speech and language disorder, so we have to take him off to the doctors because he can't "tell" us what's wrong, we can only guess (e.g not eating so perhaps his throat hurts) so we get the doctor to look in his throat/ears and tell us if it's sore.

Personally I would give the calpol. The doctor will be able to see if there is any throat/ear infection anyway and giving him a raging temperature just so the doc can see is not really on.........

Just explain to the doctor the symptoms and he will know what the problem is.

I wouldn't do cal pol before then but maybe take with you for afterwards.

Plus if his temp goes too high you run the risk of febrile convulsions........def give the calpol!

I avoid giving calpol for pain, eg. bang on the head, pulled muscle before a dr's appointment but not for a high temperature. I'd probaby make a note of what his temperature is before giving the calpol, but most dr's will tell you to go away see if it helps anyway. I'd also ask if he can wait in a seperate area when you get there, you really don't want to be passing that around Smile

I'd give the calpol, but tell the doc when & how much you gave him.

I've been in this situ before & didn't give the calpol....all I was told to do was go away, give calpol & come back!

Give him the Calpol. Would you suffer just because you can verbalise your problems.
Your nan sounds a delight.

Ok giving him calpol now! I cant stand him feeling ill unnecessarily! Hopefully the doctor will tell us where it hurts him because everytime I ask him where it hurts he shows me his little finger! Bless him!
Thanks for your quick replies everyone!

Let us know how you get on, hope he's feeling better real soon!

IME Drs prefer you to have given calpol. Hope appointment goes well.

Ok everyone thanks again for your advice everyone. Ds has a sore throat. Apparently viral, so its calpol first, calprofen if his temparature doesn't go down with calpol and simple linctus for his cough. I did give him some calpol, I put it in his drink so no one knew! ;)
