To think people on trains should just shut up?

Not a very serious AIBU, but still.

Sitting on the train today in a crowded carriage, some jack-the-lad proceeds to have an endless convo with some prospective employer. We heard everything about him, including his desire to move into a whole new career stream , his salary expectations (18k to start, but wants 100k within 3 years, hahahahahaha), and lots of other stuff.

A couple of English-speaking Scandinavian tourists opposite were clearly quite startled by all of this, as was the entire carriage as he boomed all this out at top volume.

Honestly, AIBU to wonder why the flip people have to do this in public? Is it an age thing? (he was in his 20's I'd say). Having said that, I've also heard an older person, clearly some legal type, exchanging details about a criminal trial over the phone, and a woman ringing the police to discuss her problems with a stalker.

Has the world gone mad or is it just me?

This is why many people listen to music etc on the train, so they don't have to listen into other peoples chatter.
YANBU to expect other people to speak at a reasonable volume though.

TattyDevine · 17/04/2012 11:39

I was all ready to say YABU due to it being public transport etc but all those examples would make me think, oh do shut up. If its a couple of people chatting to each other, well that's fine (because some people get annoyed at that which I think is unfair) but booming conversations like you mentioned, absolutely.

YANBU

laughlovelife · 17/04/2012 11:40

some people dont have time, and the only time they can fit new job prospects, etc... is in there commute.

YANBU if they are shouting this at high volume, but YABU to think that people shouldn't do it on a train.

YANBU. I wish everyone on trains would just SHUT UP! There are no quiet carriages on the routes I use, unfortunately.

In my experience, it's usually the tourists who are the loudest (and most likely to be talking as they are travelling in groups).

There was some bloke on my very quiet train yesterday listening to some football report on his iphone. Without headphones. I was trying to read. Glaring didn't work, so I ended up moving (didn't feel like confronting him in a fairly empty carriage). Annoying because I was sat there first!

WorraLiberty · 17/04/2012 11:43

Just take your own phone out of your pocket and pretend to have an even louder conversation than theirs Grin

"WHHAAAT? THE CAT'S SHIT ALL OVER THE KITCHEN UNIT AGAIN?? GET GRANNY OUT OF BED AND MAKE HER CLEAN IT UP....OH AND TELL HER TO USE PLENTY OF KY JELLY BEFORE SHE GOES ON HER DATE WITH BOB"

ExitPursuedByABear · 17/04/2012 11:43

Agree - I hate it. But I also can't stand the Boom, Boom, Boom from headphones. I have asked people to turn them down.

Boring conversations conducted at full volume, particularly when you can only hear one side of the conversation make me feel very stabby.

(grin) @ worra!

toofattorun · 17/04/2012 12:23

Grin I mean! feel like a right twunt now

KeepOrfThemCarbs · 17/04/2012 12:27

I always sit in quiet carriages.

But that drives me mad anyway as all you can hear is the 'tap tap tap' as people work diligently on their laptops.
