who is 3 ?
I'm in 2 minds about it
he saw an advert a while back an keeps going on about it and is in a 'phase'
about dinosaurs.
I saw it when I was four and was not affected but am fully prepared for a flaming.

Well......

I've showed it to DS1 who is 5. We watched in stages and I explained the CGI, basic science etc. probably completely ruined it for him.

But it is scary. The children act well and look terrified ( the girl inparticular)

We allowed DS2 (2) to watch it up to the point where the triceratops was sick. They are all herbivores up until then. Wink

But the beginning is a bit dull and sciencey for a toddler.

whoknewthat · 15/04/2012 10:07

Both of them did love Planet Dinosaur though - even the gory bits.

Could you get it on DVD?

SillyBeardyDaddyman · 15/04/2012 10:08

Just be ready to accept that whilst some kids will be afraid of zombies yours will fear raptors. Be ready to pack an anti raptor OFRS and remember to keep a camera handy so you can record their expression when the goat lands on the top of the car! Grin

The distinction between reality and fiction is pretty blurred at that age. Too scary in my opinion and for what? Plenty of other places he can see dinosaur pics. I wouldn't show it to my 3yo personally.

If you think you are going to get flamed you must have thoughts it wouldn't be a good idea in many peoples eyes... so where are your 2 minds coming from? What is making you want to and what is stopping you?

mumblechum1 · 15/04/2012 10:13

My ds used to love JPwhen he was four, and also the sequel (lost world). He must have seen them 3 or 4 times a week at that stage where they just want to keep seeing the same film over and over. He was crazy about dinosaurs and when he was 5, he wrote a letter to the Nat History Museum asking questions which they very kindly answered Smile.

I think it depends on the child. If the child is an anxious type it may upset them; more robust and they'll be fine.

GinPalace · 15/04/2012 10:15

is he just 3 or nearly 4? Can be a big difference.

Hoebag · 15/04/2012 10:17

I was allowed to watch jurassic park , jaws etc from a very young age (4) totally unnaffected and to this day is still my favourite film.

but I can see how some people would think 'what!'

I havent taped it just thinking of doing so. I have sky plus so I could easy ff bits that are not appropriate.

Dinosaur Planet is actually worse stopped him a few times with very graphic eating scenes, just turned it over I didnt expect it to be that graphic. que much protesting.

Also I think he would probably be too young to get JP,

DP wants DD aged 4 and a half to watch JP but I don't. She has form for being terrified of dinosaurs especially T-rexes'. She actually had a minor freak out at Chester Zoo when we went round the Dinosaur bit and she saw the T-Rex.

Depends entirely on your own child though. If you think they wouldn't be scared go for it.

whoknewthat · 15/04/2012 10:23

The difference with Planet Dinosaur though is that it's just dinosaurs eating other dinosaurs. It's not frightening, just a bit graphic DS2 would attack me with a plastic dinosaur shouting 'there's blood coming out!!!'Blush

But Jurassic Park is different. People die and children are put in situations of great danger in which they seem genuinely terrified. It's not the dinosaurs which are the problem.

Hoebag · 15/04/2012 10:26

I might stick with land before time for now.

Grin I should Grin

whoknewthat · 15/04/2012 10:29

Do you have Nick Jnr?

My kids love Dinosaur Train. It's a bit cheesy but great for that age.

Hoebag · 15/04/2012 10:29

I was shocked at how graphic the eating scenes were though, is jurassic park frightening?

oh well I'll leave it a while. I think DS is more like me if he wasnt I wouldnt even consider it.

I was raised on peter benchley, michael crichton and stephen king from a very young age, I wouldnt expose him to stephen king like I was, but I was wondering if JP is on more of a fine line as it is on at like 5pm and seen more as a family film.

maybe my upbringing has warped my view slightly.

You're probably right in that he might not follow the storyline, which might make the 'scenes of grave danger' more scary as lack of context?

If you watch together and fast forward the bits which make him scared he could enjoy the dinsoaurs running round factor. But then if he wants to watch it over and over you might get fed up of doing that.

Or just wait till you are confident it isn't a problem like you say, he probably has a lifetime of films ahead to enjoy, no rush. :)

Bambino81 · 15/04/2012 10:33

It is a bit scary, my 9 year old still wont watch certain parts of it (she is a bit sensitive tho)

I think 3 is a bit too young, maybe you've forgotten how scary bits of it can be and tense?

GinPalace · 15/04/2012 10:33

Stephen King at a young age! Blimey! You must have a strong stomach now then, I still wouldn't want to watch Misery now!

Hoebag · 15/04/2012 21:10

Yeah I think I'll wait , thanks for advice.

yeah Gin I watched IT and pet cemetary quite young.

Have I steped into the past do people still tape things

freerangeeggs · 15/04/2012 21:23

It is a bit scary. Why don't you buy him a DVD of Land Before Time? I loved that when I was in my dinosaur phase.

whoknewthat · 15/04/2012 21:25

Mchappy I still 'tape' things and every now and again correct myself Grin

I'm officially old.

DS also asked what action I was doing during 'Mummy phoned the doctor' during 3 little monkeys as I was miming an old dial telephone Blush

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 15/04/2012 21:41

Oh blimey, I'm never watching IT (the clown one, right?) ever again. I watched it when I was 14, and had nightmares for weeks! Same with Pet Cemetery and also Nightmare On Elm Street.

I think JP is too scary for a just 3yo, what about that disney one, Dinosaur I think it's called?

BulletProofMum · 15/04/2012 21:43

I allowed my 4 yo to watch it. He was terrified - mistake. My 7 yo loves it. I watched jaws at 5 and it gave me nightmares for years.m

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 15/04/2012 21:43

Yep, Dinosaur, here it is!

Hoebag · 15/04/2012 21:44

I must be really resilient those films never phased me,

I watched misery at 14 though , the ankle scene ick
