To ask about skills for the younger end?

My nephew recently asked my advice on what rare/in demand skills I would pick to acquire for someone his age. He's thinking of college, and trying to get a start in the world. I told him that he should follow his interests, but I'm starting to have a few doubts. I was hoping that I could query the mn collective and ask what you think. He's pretty malleable, very smart but not the type to go for med/dent/vet etc. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

How old is he and what qualifications does/will he have? The better apprenticeships are usually given to 18yo with A-levels or level 3 BTECs. Round my way Rolls Royce and British Aerospace usually offer apprenticeships to approx 25 people a year, this can include 16yo too.

He needs to make sure he'll enjoy what he is doing, does he not have any ideas? I would suggest engineering or computing but maybe he is more of a people person and would be better off in public service. You've not really given us much to go on tbh.

People will always be born, eat, and die. Many also become ill. So midwife, catering, funeral director, nurse/physiologist.

If he likes engineering/computing and people clinical physiologist (AKA technician) is a good career. 50% go to uni to train, 50% train in a hospital with day release to get their degree.

You do things like ECGs, wotk in theatre, reprogramme pacemakers if you are in cardiology, if you go into audiology you program hearing aids and check hearing - have a look at the NHS website.

It depends on his interests. I think the type of jobs that he could find work in are: building, plumbing, nursing, care work, midwifery, police, fire service.

Look on the national jobs shortage list, or whatever it is called, for ideas.
