If I buy a gift for DN and she already has it, whose problem is it?

Should I return it and get her something else, or is it down to the parents to exchange it?

If it was an accident on your part. The parents definitely.

AceOfBase · 14/04/2012 12:52

Ask them if they want you to get her a gift or if they want to Exchange it for something she wants.

bagelmonkey · 14/04/2012 12:53

It's up to them. It would be nice if you handed over the receipt though.

OhChristHasRisenFENTON · 14/04/2012 12:57

I've always done the returning if this has happened before, which is now I always run it past the parent before I buy for a child.

If it was a gift bought for an adult however I would expect them to do the returns if necessary. I will try to get a gift receipt though and give it to them saying 'don't worry if you want to exchange it, I won't be offended'

Their problem.

I'd say the parent, they know what DN already has at home so are better placed to choose an alternative.

You could offer to exchange it for something specific, or let the parents change it. I must confess as soon as I 'gained' nieces and nephews I got gift receipts for every purchase as I'm sure duplication must happen a lot.

Jinsei · 14/04/2012 16:06

I tend to stick gift receipts in with presents now, so that it's easy for them to exchange if necessary. If the gift is for my nephew, I check with DSis before buying.
