to just throw old routers?

Odd question and somewhat unimportant in the grand scheme of things, but what on earth do I do with old routers?

I have 3 - they all work. 1 company sent me one on their assumption that I was interested (when I'd only asked for correspondence of their deals). And another two that are idle merely because I switched ISP's in the last 3 years.

I hate binning things that work and could be re used. Charity shops don't take electrical items, but they're gathering dust in my house. Want rid!

My provider sent me a prepaid envelope for posting them back, you could ask them if they want them back.

blubberyboo · 13/04/2012 10:36

yea i have tons too- dh wants to keep them "in case we need them" Hmm
you'd think there would be a recycling scheme like for mobiles

GrimmaTheNome · 13/04/2012 10:41

i think there is a special place at the tip for small electrical items.
Ours does (its a 'recycling centre' not a 'tip'). What they do with the stuff I don't know.

ragged · 13/04/2012 10:43

Ebay or Freegle. Got £20 for ours on Ebay & people coming from half way cross the county on Freegle.

GrimmaTheNome · 13/04/2012 10:44

I had a quick look and found this - maybe there's some company in this list that would take your old kit.

FannyPriceless · 13/04/2012 10:46

The provider is obliged to take them back and recycle them responsibly, or provide a means for you to do this. It's called the WEEE directive and it came into force in 2007. WEEE directive link. Don't put them in the bin.

Also, have you considered ebay? Lots of people buy this stuff.

LittleEsmeWeatherwax · 13/04/2012 10:48

Fantastic. Thanks everyone.
I could fill a small skip with all the electrical tat that's redundant in our house. Loathed to bin them though.

Great suggestions so Thanks to you all.

You could try Freecycle.

takingiteasy · 13/04/2012 10:58

Freegle/Freecycle - there are always ones on there and they seem to get snapped up. I don't understand what people do with them though - aren't they tied to your provider/contract? I'm dumb about such things.

OldGreyWiffleTest · 13/04/2012 11:09

I second Freecycle - someone will want them I am sure.

CasperGutman · 13/04/2012 12:04

My broadband providers (Virgin Media and O2) have always collected the routers from me when I've moved house or changed providers.
