And can someone explain Very Slowly-what I need to do
I have an iPhone and bought an iPad yesterday. I thought that if I put the apps from the phone onto the pad, then all the data will be there.
The apps are there but just showing up as new, empty apps.
I put the pad as a new item I'm iTunes - I think. Do I need to link them in some way? The additional problem is that the chikdrens iPods are on the same iTunes account and I do not want my stuff in their iPods and certainly do not want their gazillions of games on my devices,

Any ideas gratefully received.

Whether or not data transfers over depends on each app. Many apps, like contacts and mail, synch with programs you have on your computer or accounts (like Google) you have on the web. In this case you'll need to tell your iPad to get the data from the same place as you have told your phone to get it. If the content is stuff you've purchased from iTunes you can tell your iPod and iPad to automatically download everything bought on iTunes, but you'll get all your kids stuff too so you'll probably need to look at synching individually. If you list which apps you have I (or other posters) might be able to help further, you might also get better help posting in Geeky Stuff rather than AIBU.

You can tell iTunes which apps, music, etc. to synch with each iPod/iPad/iPhone you have on the account, but you need to set this up for each iPod etc. individually when you synch it. If you have an iPhone already and you don't have all your kid's stuff synching on to your iPhone or your stuff synching on to their iPods then you (or someone else) must have already done this at some point (iPods can get games now?).

There is a limit to how many devices you can synch with one iTunes account (5 I think). You might want to think about switching over to separate accounts for your kids - especially if they are close to an age when you might want to give them a little autonomy over purchasing, or thye are getting content they might actually want when they leave home.

Apps are not transferable, you need to buy them again.

wishiwasonholiday · 13/04/2012 07:52

Apps are transferable, if you go to iTunes it will just say install rather than the price, some games are transferable but you need to look for a save option in them.

wishiwasonholiday · 13/04/2012 07:53

App store not iTunes.

mrspnut · 13/04/2012 07:53

Apps are transferable between iPhones and iPads, you just tell the device to synch with iTunes.

olibeansmummy · 13/04/2012 07:55

You don't have to buy them again at all, you can just download them again for free ( but then you already know that as you already have, just clearing that up for others). No idea about transferring the data o we though sorry.

ClaireAll · 13/04/2012 08:18

You can have five devices allocated to each Apple ID, so you don't have to buy your apps again.

They should populate to you iPad when you first synch. You can be selective about what you synch on ITunes - there is a box to tick about selecting some/all.

It's my experience that personal data doesn't transfer, such as history or profile in games.

If an app is in the Cloud, then you should be able to share data.

You can restore your iPad from a backup of your iPhone, rather than as a new device - this will keep the settings and data on your apps, and then you can sync the apps and other content you want on your iPad. I was offered this option when I set up my original iPad, but I decided I wanted to have a clean start.

By the way, SuchProspects, I sync 15 iPads on one account on a Mac at work! I think the limit of 5 may only apply to a PC.

slovenlydotcom · 13/04/2012 08:52

Thank you rusty bear - that is what I was thinking- do you know how to do that on iTunes?

wishiwasonholiday · 13/04/2012 08:52

I've got more than 5 on my iTunes on my laptop, think I have about 10.

RustyBear · 13/04/2012 09:19

This is for iPhone to iPhone, but it should work with the iPad too Make sure you don't disconnect the iPad after the restore has finished (step 4/5), it does look as if it's done, but you need to wait and then do the sync - I think this is where people who have lost their apps have gone wrong, you need to do the sync (steps 6-8). If you've got a lot of stuff on there it can take a long time, so I'd get a book or watch TV while it's doing it, so you don't sit there obsessively looking at the progress bar.....

slovenlydotcom · 13/04/2012 09:34

RUSTYBEAR-THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

Not all apps have transferred data as they are obviously not for iPad - but the important ones have - it is now set up as I hoped!!!

Thank you for your time

Rusty thanks for setting me straight. I had another look and it's not a device limit, but a limit to the number of iTunes users you can have on one iTunes account (so the number of laptop/desktop user accounts accessing the same iTunes account). No limit on devices synching though.

RustyBear · 13/04/2012 12:14

Glad it's worked, slovenlydotcom! I have seen a comment on a forum that says the app data will transfer via a backup 'if the app has been set up properly', so maybe some aren't!

Re the syncing multiple iPads - I had heard of the 5 devices limit on a PC, but I never tracked it down, there's a lot of misinformation out there. It was one of the factors in deciding to get an iMac to sync the iPads, but not the only one -there's also the fact that I wanted a lovely shiny iMac the Head wanted the children to be able to learn to use an iMac as well as Windows PCs and that the company was offering a good deal on the bundle.
