Dd will be soon 3 and I am debating if I should remove them. She has one on her bedroom door and there is one on the kitchen door.

Wibu to remove them or is she too young

Can't remember the age - probably 2? - but it was after we'd had a rare night out and weren't feeling very well or rested that DS worked out how to do the gate on his bedroom door himself. Rattle rattle CLANG thump thump thump (footsteps of doom) thump "MUMMMMMEEEEEE", right into my hungover ear.

So we took the gate off. Didn't seem much point after that.

I want to know what you do with DC2: do you put the gates back on and train DC1 to use them properly, or does DC2 just take its chances?

i've just put two on - top and bottom of the stairs, as my one year old is like greased lighting climbing up or down as soon as my back is turned for a second.

i feel somewhat relived that I might only have to live with them for a year or so, as i already hate them.

HavePatience · 11/04/2012 22:13

Same here, Bertie. But only at the top of the stairs. He's fine with stairs but we are terrified he will be running and accidentally fall down them Blush

Springforward · 11/04/2012 22:14

DS is 3, we now ignore ones at bedroom and kitchen doors but still close one at top of stairs after bedtime.

He can open/ climb over gates now, but my thinking is that it would stop him stumbling downstairs while sleepy.

Yanbu to ask the question fgs.

startail · 11/04/2012 22:15

Top of the stairs stayed until DD2 was 5 or 6, long after she could do it herself because there are stupid steps at the top of the stairs into the bedrooms and it's really easy to trip and stumble down the main stairs. Last adult to say good night closed it. Coherent awake DDs could open it. Slept child taking a wrong turning for the loo didn't fall down the stairs.

HavePatience · 11/04/2012 22:18

Also, I'm happy for ds to open it (he still can't Shock ). We just want it to prevent him accidentally falling down the stairs.

BertieBotts · 11/04/2012 22:21

Grin Pony that will be me!

Plus presumably as soon as we remove them I will accidentally become pregnant with DC2...

McHappyPants2012 · 11/04/2012 22:25

the question is because alot of my family has asked why they are still there.

the kitchen one is open 99% of the time, but i comes in handy when younger nieces and nephews come around.

i just don't feel confident removing them

DD is 6 and one of our gates is still up. This is so elderly dog can get a break from DD who loves her just a bit too much. Even though dog is 11 she can leap the gate with ease to hide under a duvet and sleep.

Clary · 11/04/2012 23:40

Oh my gosh 3yo is fine! What do you think will happen???

We couldn't put one at the bottom on our stairs, just had one at the top. My 3 are 2 yrs apart so we never took it down between IYSWIM but I was delighted to lose it once DS2 could go up and down stairs safely (so about 12 mo for him but he was very early mobile and in control - for lots of babies more like 18mo I would say).

mummymeister · 11/04/2012 23:42

took them off when they were around 2.

McHappyPants2012 · 11/04/2012 23:46

god knows what will happen, but with my dc anything is possible
