Bloody rabbit!!!

My younger sis in her infinite wisdom bought a rabbit for her dad, my stepfather as a surprise. It's currently sitting in my conservatory after
*messing a bedroom carpet
*messing my conservatory floor
*attempting to eat my new cot
*winding my dogs up

I mentioned to my mum that we had a furry surprise- she is not happy and they don't want it. I'm going away for a few days and have no-one to look after the bloody thing!! Can't get hold of my sister.

What is it about my sisters and their bloody, bloody pets!!

Yeah I wouldn't really feed them to my pups either. Unfortunate that text does not translate humour very well. Just very pissed off right now!!

I am really Shock that she bought an animal on a whim for someone else? It's so insanely stupid I can't work out how she actually went through with it?!

Chopstheduck · 11/04/2012 20:17

Does your friend know anything about bonding rabbits? You can't just put a strange rabbit in an existing set up, they will fight, unfortunately. They have to be gradually introduced on mutual ground.

TeWihara · 11/04/2012 20:18

Hope the friend works out, if not I've heard good things about Rabbits United being able to find homes.

Chopstheduck · 11/04/2012 20:19

info about the process. It takes time, so wouldn't be an instant solution unless she has a spare hutch for your rabbit.

cherrypieplum · 11/04/2012 20:21

Thanks. She's brill with animals and I'm certainly not going to dump him and run.

Where are you? A friend in Dorset has dealings with rabbit rescue in Southampton.

puds11 · 11/04/2012 20:23

where are you cherry? i might have it if you dont want it

cherrypieplum · 11/04/2012 20:23

TeWihara he's had lots of rabbits and guinea pigs and he lost one recently. I can see she was trying to replace what he'd lost but his circumstances have changed considerably.

She was adamant he'd want one. :S

puds11 · 11/04/2012 20:26

ah darn it. I'm in the east midlands. Never mind. I'm sure you'll find someone who wants a rabbit nearer to you

cherrypieplum · 11/04/2012 20:31

Yeah I hope so.

Just saw a dead bunny on Come Dine With Me and feel guilty for joking. Going to feed it something extra tasty!!

I couldn't look after someone else's rabbit, because my dogs would eat it. Apart from that, and all the stress it's causing you, the rabbit must be pretty stressed itself, being stuck in an enclosed space with predators close by. Even if your dogs have never caught, killed, or eaten a rabbit they are still predators as far as said bunny is concerned. You should tell your sister to come and get it, now.

Chopstheduck · 11/04/2012 21:04

Mm, rabbits don't actually show their fear Outwardly neither, being a prey animal.

SparkyMcSparrow · 11/04/2012 21:04

Don't whatever you do give it back to your sister!!!!!

PurpleRomanesco · 11/04/2012 21:11

Is he eating and drinking water?

Poor little thing. Good luck with your friend she sounds perfect but I would ask where your sister got him if she has other rabbits they could get ill.

cherrypieplum · 11/04/2012 22:05

She got him from a large pet store. I've kept rabbits before and he is fine. Bright eyes, clean nose and bum etc. He's eating and drinking well. Just gobbled down loads of greens and carrots. He's used to dogs (he cuddles up with my sister's pooch by choice).

Just got to deal with miffed sister, mother and husband now!!

We ended up with a rescue rabbit after a friend's sister went off to college and her Mother stopped feeding it. It shags everything, eats furniture, scent marks any new thing in the house, herds things, bites ankles, and growls at strangers. It is a small, quivering ball of indignation covered in an unbelievabley adorable exterior. No-one ever believes us when we tell them what he's like. He is, however part of our family and we love him and chose to house him. I cannot imagine having a little dictator foisted upon us without consultation.

I do hope you fnd a good home for your rabbit. They are a joy and a vexation in equal measure.

PurpleRomanesco · 11/04/2012 22:32

Aww, Keep him. He likes you!

CupOfBrownJoy · 11/04/2012 22:34

how old is your sister? is she likely to try and do this again if this rabbit is re-homed? perhaps she was trying to do something nice without thinking it through. i am erring on her side thinking she is about 14 or 15 but if she is an adult then she should know better. All pets - rabbits, dogs stick insects you name it - need proper care and attention. a shame some folks dont realise this. good luck with finding bunnylicious a new home.

cherrypieplum · 12/04/2012 07:18

Thank you. She is nearly 20 but does have some madcap schemes! Hopefully she's learnt her lesson now...!
