in how I deal with debit card receipts? (boring I know)

I think I am a bit obsessive about them. Other than ones for big items that I need to keep, I do recycle them but I tear out the bit that gives the last 4 digits of my debit card number first. Have started now to think maybe I'm being a bit mad. AIBU and should I just throw them in the recycling as they are?

Shred 'em. Then recycle the bits.

RecursiveMoon · 11/04/2012 15:39

Buy a shredder Smile. Or keep them all obsessively like I do.

EightiesChick · 11/04/2012 15:52

I have got a shredder but it is quicker just to rip the identifying bit off then toss them in the recycling. Just that I'm now wondering whether even that is a bit OTT. Guess not if others shred them, though!

If you have kids get them to operate the shredder. It'll amuse them for ages and save you the job.

Just make sure they're not wearing a tie at the time.

HarrietSchulenberg · 11/04/2012 15:57

Unless I'm much mistaken, even the most fiendishly cunning thieves haven't yet worked out how to raid a bank account using just the last 4 digits of a debit card. Or assume the card owner's identity.

Just recycle them. If you shred them they can't be recycled. Go for green!

FrozenChocolate · 11/04/2012 15:58

But it only has the last 4 digits...I just chuck mine in the recycling. Does everyone else really shred???

No - I never shred - what a faff, they've only got the last 4 digits so how can they can be copied Confused?

TotemPole · 11/04/2012 16:01

Just rip them up and put them in the bin.

If you have DC, sort out a pile and give it to them to do while they're watching the TV.

Personally I shred them and leave them out for recycling. Rationally, I'm not sure anyone could do anything with only the last four digits of my card number, but better safe than sorry!

Our council says you shouldn't leave shredded paper loose in the recycling, but you can put it out if it's inside something that's made of paper/card itself, like a flour bag or a cereal packet.

DueinSeptember · 11/04/2012 16:15

Compost - would that work, or will the receipt paper not degrade well?

CelticPromise · 11/04/2012 16:18

I use Warren's foolproof system. Grin

McHappyPants2012 · 11/04/2012 16:19

Take them into work and put in the confidential waste bag :)

MigGril · 11/04/2012 16:20

You can in our area put a small amount of shredded paper into the compost bin. So that is where ours go.

I figger its better then they recycling bin (which you can't put loss shredded paper into anyway as it clogs up there machines apprently) as in the compost bin it gets completly distroyed in the composting process. (yes we are slightly paranoied in this house to)

FondleWithCare · 11/04/2012 16:45

I also follow warren's plan. In the interest of protecting my identity of course.
