To think this dog should be on a lead?

I really don't know whether to say something or if this was a freak accident!

We live in a ground floor flat, so the cat gets let out via our bedroom window that backs onto a gated communal car park, little grassy area and the bins. Woke up this morning after DP had gone to work and DS (7months) was still in our bed. I lent across and opened the window just as a man with his lurcher/whippet type dog was taking his bins out. He shouted whatch it! Dog ran at us I managed to scoop cat up with one arm and shut window with the other. Dog was snarling and barking and jumping at the window. I shut the blinds as cat was nearly having a heart attack! So didn't hear if the owner made comment.

It's not a vicious dog at all, I've seen it many times before we got the cat, he always goes with owner to bins etc and i've never given it a second thought! But I just keep thinking about what would of happened if I hadn't shut the window in time, like I said DS was in the bed below the window so he could of jumped in or anything! and poor pussy cat wouldn't of had a chance. He's now cowering under the bed shaking :(

Should I tell the owner the dog should be on a lead? There is more than 10 cats from surrounding flats that are let out into the grass/car park bit!

Dog-throwing? No, I didn't approve either.
But I was too slow to respond. Rather like many dog owners with dogs off the lead who then bite children and bike riders and whatnot.

Dogs off the lead are a pain in the arse I agree especially when owners can't see what the problem is. But, if the media is to be believed and certainly in my experience, children get bitten far more often by a dog they know, eg a grandparent's dog. I have also come across Staffies I would have like to have chucked over a wall but not as much as I would have liked to deck the bloody owner. Wasn't being rude about your son personally BTW

claireall you have not understood the point at all! this is about a dog trying to get into my house, when he potentially should of been restrained in the first place! a cat eating a mouse is not the same as a dog attacking a cat! Because the mouse will die, my cat would be ripped to shreds and probably not die and it would be horrific! plus a cat is a member of the family, not to mention it would cost me hundreds in vets bills! I don't understand your point about the road, he nealry came in my house while a baby was beneath the window on the bed, that is pretty dangerous to me and this dog was stupid enough to do it!

grimma yeah he was so fast, and if the window wasn't open he could of only gone in the small bush and i'm sure the dog could of got him there! I'm hoping that maybe he realises that might happen now and keep him on a lead so I won't have to say anything!

fallen your DS sounds amazing to take on a staffie! well done him!

The dog owner probably got a fright too. Most of us are responsible and keep our animals and those belonging to others safe. If the owner doesn't know you have a cat and that this is your routine he can't really be held completely to account.

If it's a communal area I'm not sure you have a leg to stand on, sorry. He might not have been expecting a cat to come out of a window, iykwim? When I'm walking my dog (greyhound, on the lead) I'm on the lookout for cats, as I know he is too; I don't expect them to be popping out of windows!

You all had a nasty shock and it's even more nerve wracking when a baby is involved. I do hope you're all feeling better now.

NoFoodwithaFace · 11/04/2012 20:11

missbetsy its a communal area with at least 10 cats. I'm surprised mine was the only one out at the time because even looking out now i can see three! He knows full well there are cats there!

hello everyone, i just thought i'd update on cat-dog-baby gate. Cat nearly got scoffed again! So i went and spoke to the man and said if you tell me when you'll be out i can keep the window shut. He was very polite and said that he wouldn't bring the dog out anymore, even though he said i was being paranoid as the dog would never touch the baby. I pointed out that i'm sure it wouldn't usually but in a stressful situation of being trapped in our house and riled up by the cat anything could happen! So even though he was a bit rude and obviously didn't care that my cat would get eaten, at least he's agreed not to bring the dog out anymore!

Glad you talked to him - can be difficult! but even if grudgingly sounds like he's seen reason.
