Peanut reaction, what to do?

Hi. Thanks for reading. Sorry to post in AIBU. Tried chat but no response. At tea today my six yr old dd had a few peanuts with her sandwich. After a few mins she complained of an itchy tongue and throat. I told her not to eat anymore and gave her ten ml piriton

Nothing else happened and the itching stopped so I have sent her to bed as normal

What to do now? Do I bring this up with the doc. Make an appointment?
How does one get diagnosed? I am very allergic hay fever, asthma etc but I'm fine with peanuts. Any advise gratefully recieved.

Yes to GP urgently.

We were given an epi-pen after DS's first reaction (itchy throat, hive and being sick) even before he had seen an allergy specialist.

Skin prick tests confirmed he was allergic to pine nut, kiwi and a few other nuts. Then the nurse gave us a detailed care plan for nursery / school and emergency epi-pen procedure.

Thanks all for such great advise. I am taking her to the GP at 4 today so hopefully we can move forward quickly. I will certainly check out the allergy boards. X

Glad you got on ok at the GP, if you need a substitute Easter Egg/choc fix for DD track down Kinnerton stuff (I think you can get it in Sainsbury's) - they do a huge 'nut free' range.

bizzey · 11/04/2012 19:07

Same here Sad for you to both have to go through the tests and all but glad that they are doing something straight away.

Was surprised at some other post who's GP'S said wait and seeConfused?

I will keep following your up dates.
GOOD LUCK

Yes Kinnerton - people buy this for DS (who isn't nut allergic btw but has allergies) because they know it's nut free. Bless people can be so nice.

Scary stuff isn't it but you do get used to it. the anaphylaxis website is very useful and have some good resources for helping children understand allergies.

Sorry if someone has already mentioned this but there are only 2 major importers of nuts into the UK. The nuts sit in giant canisters so cross contamination is possible so often best to avoid all nuts. Just found out purely by chance that dd 8 yrs has a walnut allergy. Fortunately I work in a dietetics dept so had the best advice ever about what to do next. Just waiting now for an appt with allergy clinic at local hosp.
