Came up in conversation today in the office, that I have worked as a barmaid; my colleagues where Shock and I was equally Shock that non of them have...I thought EVERYONE had worked behind a bar at some point in their life???

Ive had variousjobsinmylife, including factory work, working in kitchens, dog kennels, cleaning, callcentres; and now Im a professional

it gotme thinking--i went to uni and worked holidays/ evenings and weekends...now i think about it, hardly anyone else did that!

Am reading 'Chavs' at the minute and the author makes that very point....very large majorityof politicians have never done that kind of job and so cannot relate to the working classes AT ALL. It really hit home, how very far removed from normal folk, politicians are these days

But,most of yous have done/do these kind ofjobs-right?

Oh and I had a Saturday job from the age of 15. (WC) Parents instilled a pretty strong work ethic in me.

ModernToss · 10/04/2012 18:30

Yes, barmaid, waitress, factory work, shop work, anything I could get ... all either Saturday jobs when I was at school, or jobs during the holidays when I was at university

It's good for you.

Primrose123 · 10/04/2012 18:30

I worked in tesco while I was in university.

SparkleSoiree · 10/04/2012 18:30

I worked behind a bar when I was 18 and LOVED it! I was a hotel bedroom cleaner on weekends whilst at secondary school (hated the early starts but got to meet some famous people during that job!) and I had a small cleaning job a couple of evenings a week - could never have enough money for fashion! Wink

I think its all character building and when it wasn't character building it was because I needed the money!

Geranium3 · 10/04/2012 18:30

well i have! Chambermaid before i went to training college, worked in boots the chemist and in old peopleshome part time when i was at school, cleaning jobs and evening job in a newsagent as well as my proffessional day job when i was saving up for a house deposit.

McHappyPants2012 · 10/04/2012 18:31

i kind of did things backward.

!) TA in a school
2) cleaning ( and still am :) )

piprabbit · 10/04/2012 18:31

Not exactly. I've worked in a library while at school. Then as an underwriting assistant in my gap year. I couldn't get paid employment while at uni, so volunteered to push wheelchair users round our local shopping centre during the holidays (that was quite eye-opening in terms of access and the general public's attitude). Then I left uni and began my professional career. Since becoming a SAHM I've done various voluntary roles working with families and children.
So I've always been busy and working - but I'm not sure if the work I've done corresponds with what you are looking for?

lesley33 · 10/04/2012 18:33

Yes in a shop and a factory.

cwtch4967 · 10/04/2012 18:33

StrawberryMojito · 10/04/2012 18:33

No bars or call centres, but shops, farm, office temp stuff. Lucky to land a professional job in my field shortly after graduating.

BenedictsCumberbitch · 10/04/2012 18:35

Worked behind a bar
Chambermaided
Waitressing
Receptionist
Till tart at Sainsbury's

Gave me a very strong drive to get a good job and I'll encourage both my kids to do similar. I have worked since I was 15 and always had at least one, frequently 2 jobs on the go.

bejeezus · 10/04/2012 18:36

Haha puggy me too...I reminisce often!

you have all reassured me somewhat

but tee no I dont tjink it has ALWAYS been the way with politicians...a lot of labour politicians pre-thatcher/pre NEW-labour were working class I believe?

FateLovesTheFearless · 10/04/2012 18:36

I am 27 and a very happy bartender! The job fits around my four kids and I love it. Previous to that I was a bar supervisor and loved that too.

A jobs a job. Anyone who holds themselves too high and mighty to work as any of the jobs stated in the op is a knob in my opinion. I have an unemployed friend that frequently says they wouldn't be seen dead working in macdonalds. Ridiculous.

flowery · 10/04/2012 18:36

While I was a student I worked in a corner shop, a cash and carry and selling double glazing on the phone before starting work full time. My first full time job was as a retail manager although I later had a spell as a receptionist before wandering into my current field.

openerofjars · 10/04/2012 18:36

DH & I met while we were working in a bar .

I liked the job at the time, but it was my second job so I was always knackered! I would go back to bar work, retail, office temping, whatever if necessary. DH would go back to doing bar work tomorrow if not for shit pay and antisocial hours (I think he'd find that he is now an Old Git and that all the rest of the staff would be barely out of nappies and bemused by his need to go home at the end of a shift instead of having a lock in).

Both of us had low-paid jobs for years.

FreakoidOrganisoid · 10/04/2012 18:37

I've worked as a cleaner and a waitress for a catering company. Have never done bar, restaurant, shop or factory work though.

bejeezus · 10/04/2012 18:37

yeah benedicts i did have 4 jobs on the go once!!

jen127 · 10/04/2012 18:37

Packing shelves in a supermarket was my first job! 3 nights a week for about 12 new pounds....

MilkNoSugarAndAShotofWhisky · 10/04/2012 18:37

I've never ever worked in a job that wasn't related to childcare-school/nursery/nanny

That's a bit peculiar!

OneLittleBabyTerror · 10/04/2012 18:37

No never for me either. And I think it's normal for middle class to not have. My parents helped with uni fees so I don't have to work term time. And during the summer holidays, I did summer placements related to my uni course. I was lucky that I did engineering. The summer placements were paid and not too hard to come by.
