Talk about overload. If there is another radio or tv program about it, I will, well ...I will. Lost for a good threat. It was big, it went down, lives were lost. Now can we move on.

Shock Warren. I bet it costs a fortune too doesn't it?

LeBOF · 10/04/2012 14:42

Really Warren? Trust your family Grin

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 10/04/2012 14:44

I'd have nothing against commemorating those who died and remembering the (pretty big after all) event, in a respectful way.

But some of the stuff just seems either quite ghoulish, or "a bit of a lark" - I don't have anything against the relatives of survivors/victims wanting to remember them, or documentaries about what happened. But it's the random "enthusiasts" sailing off in period costume to have a perve at where it sank, or all the flipping cookery stuff (recreating the last meal the poor sods might have had, for people to cook at home for fun, wtf?) - that just seems a bit sick.

Sparklingbrook · 10/04/2012 14:46

The programmes I have caught some of seem to particuarly like the bit about the band playing as the ship went down. Sad

Katienana · 10/04/2012 14:48

I think some of the commerations are closer to celebrations than memorial which is a bid strange. But the Titanic will always fascinate people because it's a snapshot of a moment in history, an illustration of the class system, and one of those tragedies where you can place yourself in that situation and think, 'what would I do?' I think I would find it very hard to leave my husband on the ship in similar circumstances! (Women and children first).
I know the Titanic isn't even the worst cruise ship disaster in terms of loss of life but I think the fact that it sank on it's maiden voyage, went down so quickly (90 minutes after hitting the iceberg) and then snapped in two pieces makes it especially horrifying.
If it gets people interested in history then it's a good thing overall. And it was definitely famous before the film, I can remember doing projects on it at school in the early 90s and watching the documentary when they explored the wreck - the footage of a child's doll being especially eerie and moving.

Kladdkaka · 10/04/2012 14:51

I saw a bit of that Titanic drama on ITV. The thing that struck me the most was how it all comes across as quite jolly in a disaster sort of way. These films/programmes never even begin to touch on the sheer terror of what these people endured.

NoFoodwithaFace · 10/04/2012 14:58

I can't get enough! obviously in respect for those that lost their lives but it's also a real insight into the british class system etc! i'm loving that programme on itv on sunday nights!

girliefriend · 10/04/2012 14:58

YANBU, I really don't get why people are so interested in it Confused like others have said far worse tragedys have happened since that get little or no media coverage.

MNHelenisSTILLPansfavourite · 10/04/2012 15:00

And this week I am off with dd to see the Titanic filum in 3-D! She is utterly fascinated by the whole thing.

StealthPolarBear · 10/04/2012 15:02

OK I had no idea about Warren's weird family and that ilk :o Yes that is weird. Remember and discuss, fine, but drinking champagne above the wreck is gruesome.
Lol at Titanoraks though.

WetAugust · 10/04/2012 15:03

YADNBU I almost started the samr thread myself last night.

It's totally overboard

Minimammoth · 10/04/2012 15:07

Sabriel. Believe me I am avoiding as much as possible, but it crops up everywhere. No I don't watch reality tv either, and I like a good history program. But .... Enough now.

squoosh · 10/04/2012 15:27

YA so NBU

It is overkill. And it doesn?t equate with 9/11 as that was a terrorist attack. Inflicted by other humans. Titanic was down to bad weather and bad engineering.

There have been many other tragedies since Titanic that have been lost in the mists of time,

In 1865, the Sultana, a Mississippi riverboat, exploded and burned, with the loss of than 1,500 lives.
In 1915, Lusitania was torpedoed by a German submarine, 1,200 people died.
In 1904, the General Slocum caught fire and sank in New York's East River killing over 1000 people.

Yet for some reason all we hear about is Titanic. Belfast now has a Titanic museum. Well done us, we built a huge ship, it sank. Come visit!

I blame Celine Dion.

missmalteser · 10/04/2012 15:31

Arf at I blame Celine Dion :)

Rezolution · 10/04/2012 15:34

Only a very small percentage of the population in the UK at that time could afford to travel on Titanic. Not even 1% I reckon. The richest people grabbed the tickets and many of them perished. Not as bad as some of the ships carrying children that were torpedoed in WW2 imho. People have short memories.

celticlassie · 10/04/2012 15:36

That's how I feel about the bloody Olympics.

LineRunner · 10/04/2012 15:36

I am glad someone else posted this. I wouldn't have dared. But I'm thinking it. Len Goodman was the final straw for me. That and Kate Winslet's tits in 3D.

bronze · 10/04/2012 15:39

The problem is this thread has made me laugh about a sad event

Sparkling - we can hope can't we?

galletti · 10/04/2012 15:42

EmilyPollfax - I think you will find that the majority of people who died on the Titanic were not rich and famous, they were crew, and second and third class passengers. In fact a total of 1387 out of 1517 passengers.

I think it holds a real significance to a lot of people (myself included) is because it was a huge loss of life, and has given us a real insight into how life was lived at that time (including an awful lot of injustice - how people were treated for being a different Class - heartbreaking).

Just because we remember this tragedy doesn't mean that any other tragedy is any less significant.

Rezolution · 10/04/2012 15:44

celtic Don't start me off about the bloody Olympics! It is not fair that the general population have to pay for this lot. yes, I know I will be flamed but I do feel that millions of people in this country will be footing the bill for the Olympics and have no earthly chance of attending it. In fact millions of us are not even interested in it. It is "bread and circuses". And don't try to kid me that it will boost UK trade figures because that just won't wash. Angry

TunipTheVegemal · 10/04/2012 15:44

The Onion was spot on on this, I think.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/04/2012 15:47

Loads of posho's died

There's plenty to celebrate if you're a certain type of macabre person

When some of the posho's (Cal?) died in the Winslet film people cheered in the showing I was in (in America)

I haven't noticed anything about it recently apart from it's been released in 3d and I saw it was on at the cinema
