Just read this story www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2127315/Alicia-Silverstone-defends-controversial-practice-pre-chewing-baby-sons-food.html

What do you think of this method? My SIL used to do it to her kids. It is really disgusting. Also, when I was a very young child I remember seeing my cousin's wife doing it to their kid. Even though I was like 6 or 7 I found it disgusting.
I have seen how mums put pacifiers into their mouths and then stick them back into their babies' mouths. Why do mums have to do it?

i have done this, chewed, or biten food and then taken it out of my mouth and given it to mine when little, i dont see the problem?

we havent always had blenders, or baby food etc, and mine have always had whatever we are having so if i have to bite it etc before giving it to them then i have done!

CheshireDing · 10/04/2012 23:33

Sounds disgusting.

Isn't that what owls do? Hmm

bejeezus · 10/04/2012 23:45

I wouldn't pre chew my babies food, I sometimes let the dog do it for her though

oikopolis · 10/04/2012 23:46

it doesn't bother me at all. i can't see myself doing it but it certainly doesn't disgust me, after all, there are lots of impoverished people out there who can't afford blenders and fancy pureed baby food. it's not disgusting when they do it, so why should i have a problem with it?

the west is obsessed with bacteria and so on but really, you are more likely to make your baby deathly ill by exposing him to the bacteria in a "clean" hospital than you are by doing what AS is doing...

5madthings · 10/04/2012 23:47

owls regurgitate their food, so essentially sick it back up for the little owls, so no its not what owls do.

DP and i took MIL for lunch one day, DD was about 8 months old and MIL started chewing a piece of garlic bread and then put it in DD's mouth, there was a big string of spit going from her mouth to DD's, god i feel like vomiting even writing it! I told DP to tell her to stop it as she could pass germs on, she thought it was natural and ok. Different strokes for different folks but it's not something i agree with

TheSockPuppet · 11/04/2012 00:03

I watched the video of her spitting her food into the mouth of her (almost 1yr oldHmm) baby and thought it was horrible, germs aside it made my stomach turn. Why didn't she just cut up his food?

Lovefruitsandvegs · 11/04/2012 12:28

Ah, oral sex. Someone mentioned papilloma and that is a good reason too.

Babies coming out of vagina (it happens once) and spitting food into their mouths are completely different things.

My mum did not have a blender but she mashed food and chopped meat very finely. There are graters for fruits and vegetables. Nuts are easily crushed when needed with a rolling pin, a cup or a bottle.
Which food are you giving to your babies that they cannot digest by themselves (McDonalds)? Obviously the food should be right for the baby's age. We live in the 21 century where we have forks, spoons, blenders, mashers, steamers. Parents who pre-chew food for their kids are either delusional or are just taking pleasure from doing it.

You can wash the dummy if you are at home. There are baby wipes for outside use if indeed it is very urgent but then many mums carry two dummies just in case.

JingleMum, when my FIL comes over I hide some of our childrens' musical instruments. He puts them into his mouth and he has terrible teeth and terrible breath. My DH just told me to hide the toys.

Its probably some hollywood parenting guru fad Hmmher son isnt even a baby isnt he over a year old , he is able to chew . it is pretty out there and a bit ewwww imo

Mrsjay · 11/04/2012 12:39

Alicia silverstone is not impovorished , what did we do without blenders we mashed it chopped it and he is a year old with teeth he can do that thing we normal parents call chew Grin

CherryBlossom27 · 11/04/2012 12:40

I think it's a bit gross and it's definitely unnecessary. I also don't like people licking dummies and then passing it back to their babies, I don't use a dummy, but if I did I thought the idea was to sterilise them?

ArtVandelay · 11/04/2012 12:41

My Gran used to spit on a tissue and wipe my face with it when I was a child. It was really upsetting for me then and also now - she smoked and it stank If I ever caught anyone doing that to DS there would be ructions indeed.

I have no real problem with this with tiny ones but why is she doing it to a year old baby? They can chew all sorts at that age - that bit is very wierd.
