When I was in primary school I was taught the days of the week from the order Sunday to Saturday, so Saturday was the end of the week iyswim. But since I left primary school Sunday has always been the end of the week and a new week started on a Monday.

DS has just learned his days of the week in school now too in the same way and if either me or dp say it in order from Monday to Sunday he corrects us.

Why are children (I am just assuming it is all children and not just me or ds) taught the days of the week this way and not from Monday to Sunday?

My de just told me that the week starts with Sunday. I always count from Monday though so he is wrong wrong wrong.

complexnumber · 09/04/2012 18:28

You think you've got problems! Here we have the weekend on Thursday/Friday but the countries next to us go for Friday/Sat.

FallenCaryatid · 09/04/2012 18:49

Our infants sing this one.

sashh · 10/04/2012 05:16

EllenParsons
But that is the old testament when the sabbath was (and for Jews and First Day Adventists) Saturday.

Sunday is the first day of the week.

complexnumber · 10/04/2012 06:00

I work in the Middle East, Our working week runs from Sat to Wed, so weekend is Thurs/Fri.

I don't think I'll ever get properly used to it.

sleeplessinsuburbia · 10/04/2012 06:30

sashh is right. My dad is quite learned on this issue. Another way for non Jewish people to distance themselves in the past.

Dawndonna · 10/04/2012 09:07

Sunday is the first day of the week.
(Dh has degree in theology)

marriedinwhite · 10/04/2012 10:26

I would say that theologically Sunday is the first day of the week taking into account the fact that Saturday for the Old Testament was the last day. And on the 7th day, he rested. It's all laid out very neatly in Genesis.

BreconBeBuggered · 10/04/2012 10:37

Bugger theology. Solomon Grundy = born on Monday, blah blah blah blah, buried on Sunday. So the week starts on a Monday.
What day is it today again? (confused)

MamaMary · 10/04/2012 11:02

After Jesus died the disciples met to pray on the first day of the week. That's why church is on Sunday and it's the first day of the week.

marriedinwhite · 10/04/2012 11:21

That's interesting MamaMary - where the Old and New Testaments meet.

ragged · 10/04/2012 11:24

I think Monday to Sunday makes huge sense & I much prefer it. It always did, even though I was taught Sunday-Saturday in school I always thought that was the wrong way to think about it. Full blessings to teacher of OP's DC.

BusinessTrills · 10/04/2012 11:29

There is no first or last day of the week - weeks are continuous, they just keep going.

You should be able to "say" your days starting from any day if you wanted to (e.g. if Brownies is on Wednesday and you wanted to count how many days there were from now til then)

bejeezus · 10/04/2012 11:31

My husband comes from a country where the first day of the week is saturday AND the day starts at 6am, therefore 0000hrs is 6am in English time, there 12 oclock lunchtime is 0600hrs

can be very confusing, when trying to make arrangements!

bejeezus · 10/04/2012 11:32

weekEND, would suggest to me that sunday is the LAST day?

sausagesandmarmelade · 10/04/2012 12:18

Sunday is definitely the first day of the week...

Monday is the first day of the working week (which runs Monday to Friday)

frasersmummy · 10/04/2012 12:31

I have just asked ds 6 what the first day of the week is... answer .. Thursday..

great teaching here clearlyGrin

more moaning and nagging gentle questioning later and he has clearly been taught Monday is the first day of the week

to the tune of the adams family

days of the week snap snap
days of the week snap snap
days of the week days of the week days of the week snap snap

there's monday and there's tuesday
there's wednesday and there's thursday
there's friday and there's saturday
and then there's sunday too

days of the week snap snap
days of the week snap snap
days of the week days of the week days of the week snap snap

nizlopi · 10/04/2012 12:33

I'm mostly annoyed by the song my son has been taught to the tune of 'The Addams Family'

'Days of the week CLAP CLAP Days of the week CLAP CLAP'

It bores a hole into the brain and lives there for the rest of the week.

I don't care WHAT day of the week it all starts, those feckless, sackless teachers should be working 24/7.

Rinkan · 10/04/2012 17:32

The Fonz says it's Sunday Grin

Aribura · 10/04/2012 17:36

I was taught Sunday first, non-religious school.

workshy · 10/04/2012 17:38

Tee2072 · 10/04/2012 17:58

< ignoring gavel> Get used to it. For a few years what teacher says is law, and if you differ you will be wrong. Then, later, teacher, like all other adults, knows nothing.
